For a bowler, taking all ten wickets in an innings is the ultimate statistical feat. It is also a very rare one: in nearly 60,000 first-class matches it has been achieved only 81 times. Surprisingly, although books have been written about Hedley Verity’s world record ten for 10 in 1932 and Jim Laker’s all-ten in the 1956 Old Trafford Test, nobody has ever written a book describing every all-ten. Until now. All Ten chronicles each all-ten, from Edmund Hinkly’s at Lord’s in 1848 to Zulfiqar Babar’s at Multan over a century and a half later. All-tens have been taken at many different venues, from famous Test match grounds to outgrounds on which first-class cricket is no longer played. Some were taken by great bowlers such as Colin Blythe and Clarrie Grimmett, some by less well-known ones including Harry Pickett of Essex and Tom Graveney’s brother Ken. Some bowlers were at the beginning of their careers, some were nearing the end. You will read about them all here and their very special feat, and maybe wonder why the bowlers at the other end didn’t strike even once, why many of the greatest bowlers of all-time never took an all-ten, and why all-tens have become much rarer in the last half century.

Indian cricket was traditionally known for its spin bowling. All that changed with the advent of the magnificent Kapil Dev in 1978. The floodgates really opened in the new millennium with Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan leading a revolution that today sees India's pace attack as among the best in the world. But how many know that from the late 19th century right till the 1940s it was fast bowlers that shaped the early years of Indian cricket? From Pavri and Bulsara to Nissar and Amar Singh, batsmen from around the world found Indian pace bowling too hot to handle.

What is the highest number of runs a player has scored in Test matches without ever being dismissed? Did P. G. Wodehouse name Bertie Wooster's valet, Jeeves, after a county cricketer? Why is Ashley Giles known as the 'King of Spain'? Who scored the 1,000th century in Test cricket? No one knew and loved, cricket quite like Bill Frindall - his passion and his encyclopaedic knowledge of the game was evident as soon as he took over scoring for Test Match Special in 1966, a post he held until his death in 2009. In 2001, he began offering his cricket expertise through a column on the Test Match Special website, 'Ask Bearders'. Fans would write in with the most difficult and arcane questions possible, hoping to 'Stump the Bearded Wonder'. They never did. Ask Bearders collects the best of the Q & As from Bill's popular column, offering cricket fans a one-stop compendium of the most challenging bits of history and statistics the game has to offer. It is a unique testament to the perfection Bill sought in his study of the game, and an essential book for any serious cricket fan
