Il volume è dedicato alla pubblicazione di uno degli scavi archeologici più importanti condotti negli ultimi anni nella città di Bologna. Le indagini, da poco concluse, hanno restituito una sequenza stratigrafica che copre significativi periodi storici (dall’età villanoviana al periodo medievale) e restituisce un quadro complesso e articolato della frequentazione di una parte del territorio ancora oggi densamente urbanizzato. Completa il quadro conoscitivo l’edizione preliminare di altri due importanti scavi archeologici, quelli di via Capramozza e di viale Aldini, eseguiti quasi contemporaneamente all’intervento di via D’Azeglio e situati a breve distanza da questo. Chiude il volume un intervento in cui viene esposto un primo bilancio degli scavi, condotti a Bologna negli ultimi anni, che hanno toccato i depositi archeologici di età preromana arricchendo in modo non marginale il quadro generale dell’antica Felsina, ancora fondato sul grande lavoro di sintesi prodotto da Antonio Zannoni alla fine dell’Ottocento.

Under excavation since the 1850s, Kainua offers a trove of insights into Etruscan culture and society. The volume’s editor, Elisabetta Govi, and her fellow experts examine the material evidence underlying our understanding of the history, economy, religion, and social structures of Kainua, including trade routes that linked the city with the wider Mediterranean. Il volume prende in esame una serie di interventi archeologici, finora inediti, realizzati nell’arco di più di un decennio (2000-2013) nel corso dei lavori finalizzati alla riqualificazione del centro storico di Ferrara. In questa zona, nella quale si concentravano i palazzi del potere della signoria Estense, le indagini hanno interessato in modo particolare la vasta area di piazza Municipale, dell’edificio ex Bazzi e del Giardino delle Duchesse, sulla quale insisteva il Palazzo di Corte Vecchia e il Palazzo Ducale con gli annessi giardini; corso Martiri della Libertà, dove si trovavano la Loggia Grande e il Castello Estense, al cui interno è stato possibile rinvenire il Giardino Pensile, del quale si possedevano solo sparute notizie, voluto da Eleonora d’Aragona moglie di Ercole I; via Coperta di cui sono venute in luce le diverse fasi costruttive, oltre al Camerino d’Alabastro di Alfonso I; infine, la parte terminale di corso Martiri della Libertà che ha consentito di scoprire le strutture relative alla Porta dei Leoni, situata lungo il circuito settentrionale delle mura medievali e strettamente collegata al Castello Estense. Le ricerche, incentrate soprattutto sul periodo del ducato di Ercole I (1471-1505), si sono avvalse di numerose fonti storiche e documentali; il rinvenimento di butti ricchi di ceramiche, vetri, metalli e resti di pasto ha completato lo studio della cultura materiale del periodo. Un’attenzione particolare è stata inoltre dedicata alla ricostruzione dell’aspetto botanico del Giardino delle Duchesse.

Il secondo volume della collana «IdA» vuole offrire un’analisi critica delle evidenze archeologiche emerse sulla vetta di Monte Giovi e presentare alcune considerazioni sulla natura del sito etrusco che, nel nome come nelle testimonianze, rimanda indubbiamente alla sfera religiosa. Negli ultimi decenni importanti ricerche hanno modificato profondamente il quadro delle conoscenze di questo territorio posto nella parte più settentrionale dell’Etruria propria, terra di passaggio e giunzione con il mondo padano. La nuova fase della ricerca archeologica, iniziata da Giuliano De Marinis negli anni Novanta del secolo scorso, dopo le indagini a I Monti (San Piero a Sieve) si è intensificata con gli scavi pluriennali condotti a Poggio Colla (Vicchio) e a San Martino a Poggio (Frascole), entrambi compresi nella valle del Mugello e contemporanei alle scoperte e alle ricerche effettuate sul versante fiorentino, come quelle a Pietramarina e a Gonfienti. Accanto agli isolati nuclei dell’aristocrazia orientalizzante nel territorio fiesolano sono così apparsi nuovi insediamenti e santuari, diversificate produzioni artigianali e importazioni; tutte rivelano nel loro insieme un quadro culturale complesso in parte ridefinito dalla recente pubblicazione di varie carte archeologiche. In questa ottica, l’edizione delle ricerche di Monte Giovi vuole essere un utile termine di confronto verso lo studio e l’auspicabile presentazione di tutti questi importanti contesti che non potranno che modificare e aggiornare molte delle considerazioni qui contenute.
