Il volume ricostruisce i tratti fondamentali del pensiero di Alexis de Tocqueville, la cui vita politica e intellettuale ruota intorno all’intuizione che la storia della modernità coincide con il movimento della società verso l’eguaglianza delle condizioni, cioè con la transizione dalla civiltà aristocratica alla civiltà democratica, ancora incerta e in divenire, fondata sullo “stato sociale democratico”. In questa ricostruzione assume un rilievo centrale il rapporto tra liberalismo e democrazia. Per Tocqueville, se l’eguaglianza è un fatto, la libertà è il valore assoluto, e il compito dei liberali è quello di dare all’ineluttabile processo di democratizzazione quelle forme istituzionali che garantiscano a tutti la libertà.

Il volume ripropone, con poche varianti, la trascrizione della Scienza Nuova del 1725, pubblicata da A. Battistini nelle Opere (Milano, 1990). È stata aggiunta l’epistola dedicatoria dell’8 maggio 1725 al cardinale Corsini, preceduta da un’Introduzione del curatore che richiama l’attenzione del lettore su due complesse, intersecantisi questioni (Provvidenza e linguaggio) e in grado di declinare i contenuti fondamentali della svolta teorica promossa da Vico nel 1725, trattando del divino e del logos in una prospettiva non più naturalistica né cosmologica né creazionistica ma antropologica, funzionale, cioè, ad un nuovo ideale di conoscenza e di azione. L’esigenza nuova è di meditare sui principi di una scienza nuova dei saperi tradizionali (filologici e filosofici) che intenda ricostruire le esperienze dell’umano nelle sue origini e possibili evoluzioni, apparse slegate e prive di sistematicità; prima di tutte le attitudini alla vita della e nella parola che alle origini è gesto, monosillabo in sintonia con una logica che, prima di diventare razionale, è poetica. Qui siamo all’altezza di una delle grandi novità teoriche dell’opera: la ricerca di un “sistema” di filosofia platonica e religione cristiana che riceva «necessità di scienza» dal certo della filologia e si definisca nelle articolazioni storiche della vita delle cose e delle lingue dalle cose, «onde si formino con un getto stesso la filosofia dell’umanità e la storia universale delle nazioni» in una corrispondenza non del tutto risolta in unità dinamica.

Political science research, especially in recent times, has recognized the centrality of party and executive leaders and their individual characteristics. The attention has been mostly directed towards individual leadership. However, one-chief leadership is not the only existing model of party governance, and some recent developments seem to have put forms of collective leadership into the spotlight. Two parties that have recently achieved remarkable electoral results, the Italian Five Star Movement and the German Alliance 90/The Greens, can be considered examples of alternative models of leadership. This book calls for a deep and systematic analysis of cases of parties in which powers and responsibilities appear to be shared among different individuals rather than being concentrated in the hands of just one leader. Drawing on the literature of organization and management theory, the book fills a gap in the literature of political science by developing a theoretical framework that may provide researchers with the tools for proceeding with the analysis of cases of party collective leadership. To illustrate their approach, the authors have selected three cases – the German Greens, Alternative for Germany, and the Five Star Movement in Italy – that show significant variation across types of collective leadership. The outcome of the empirical analysis contributes to a better knowledge of the nature and functioning of party leadership as well as raises questions that could be further addressed in future research.
