Aus ihr heraus blickte das funkelnde Sternbild der Kassiopeia herab auf die alte, immer noch mit so viel Torheit erfüllte Mutter Erde, und der Große Bär mit seinen sieben hellen Sternen, jener geheimnisvollen, im menschlichen Leben eine so merkwürdige Rolle spielenden Zahl, leistete ihr auf der andern Seite des gewaltigen Himmelsgewölbes die aus der Urzeit stammende, treubewährte Gesellschaft. Kunterbunt, in ungleichmäßiger Verteilung, in verschiedenartiger Helligkeit und Größe lagen die übrigen Sterne dazwischen, scheinbar noch an ihrem alten, gewohnten Platze. Langsam schritt die Nacht vor. Im Süden stieg das prachtvolle Sternbild des Orion über dem Horizont empor, und bald darauf erschien auch der Sirius, der glänzendste unter den glänzenden Sternen des Himmels. Für all diese Schönheit der Nacht, für all diese Großartigkeit jener fernen, selbstleuchtenden Sonnen schien augenblicklich derjenige am wenigsten zugänglich zu sein, dessen berufliche Aufgabe gerade die Erforschung des Sternenhimmels war. Professor Stiller, der berühmte Astronom, Lehrer an der durch Alter wie Überlieferung gleich ehrwürdigen Universität Tübingen, ruhte in seinem Lehnstuhl, mit den Fingern der Rechten ärgerlich auf dessen Seitenlehne trommelnd. Er saß in einem großen, mit einer Kuppel bedeckten Raum, der auf den ersten Blick als Observatorium oder Sternwarte zu erkennen war. Ein mächtiges Fernrohr auf massiven Pfeilern ragte aus einer Öffnung der drehbaren Kuppel hinaus in die klare Winternacht. Professor Stiller hatte sich vor Jahren schon auf der ruhigen Bopserhöhe bei Stuttgart eine Privatsternwarte erbaut, um sich in ihr, fern vom lauten studentischen Leben und Treiben der Universitätsstadt, um so ungestörter der Planetenforschung zu widmen. Ganz besonders hatte der Mars, jener geheimnisvolle Planet, dessen Bahn die der Erde zunächst umschließt, Professor Stillers Interesse geweckt. Dieses Interesse wurde mehr und mehr zu einem Privatstudium, und aus diesem heraus wuchs eine so große Liebe zu dem fernen Planeten, daß in Professor Stiller der Gedanke immer festere Wurzeln faßte, mit dem Mars in unmittelbare Verbindung zu treten, mit andern Worten — ihn zu besuchen.
