Bis heute wird das diskursive Umfeld der beiden großen volkssprachlichen enzyklopädischen Dichtungen des ausgehenden Mittelalters, des »Roman de la Rose« (Guillaume de Lorris/Jean de Meung) und der »Divina Commedia« (Dante Alighieri), zu wenig wahrgenommen. Das Symposion resümiert Perspektiven auf die Allegorie im Anschluss an Benjamin und de Man und entwickelt sie weiter. Die Allegorie wird dabei als Reflexion des Zeichens im Zeichen aufgefasst. Mit selbstreflexiven Praktiken des Fragments, des Zitats, der Collage oder beispielsweise einer ironisch ausgestellten Metanarrativität und Metafiktionalität haben Moderne und Postmoderne zu einer Wiederkehr der Allegorie als analytischer Kategorie Anlass gegeben. Sie macht auch diejenigen Zeichenpraktiken neu lesbar, die zuvor als mimetisch begriffen worden sind. Der Schwerpunkt des Bandes liegt auf kulturwissenschaftlichen und historischen Fragestellungen. Themen sind u.a.: die Allegorie als eine Technik des Erinnerns, Aneignens, Durchdringens und Überlagerns von Kulturen; die symbolische Selbstverständigung kultureller Kollektive mittels allegorischer Narrative; die Diskurse, in denen die Allegorie im Feld historischer Konkurrenzbegriffe diskutiert wird; allegorische Verfahren des Verrätselns und Verbergens im Sinne des Geheimnisses oder der Chiffre. Anhand exemplarischer Analysen von Texten, Bildern und multimedialen Inszenierungen werden die allegorischen Formen des Zeigens und Bedeutens in einem historisch je spezifischen sozialen Feld der Kunst- und Kulturproduktion situiert.

What is the meaning of a "bestseller" for the history of literature? How do we defi ne it in the fi rst place, and what consequences does the success on the book market have for the literary evaluation of a text? What is the relationship between quantity and quality? Many literary scholars shy away from doing research on "bestsellers", but the question regarding the formation of a literary canon is closely connected with this issue. How do we evaluate the quality of a text in the fi rst place? The topic of the "bestseller" forces us to examine more closely the relationship between the reading public, literary scholarship, and the book market. On the one hand we have to examine the sales strategies for a book, on the other we have to consider what intentions a literary text might pursue fi rst of all, and how we as literary scholars have to engage with the text critically. From this results also the challenge to re-investigate the foundation of literary scholarship and to take note of premodern and modern "bestsellers" in their social-historical and mental-historical relevance, without ignoring the textual aesthetics.

Wie in wenigen Werken des 19. Jahrhunderts verbinden sich im Œuvre Alessandro Manzonis politische, ästhetische und theologische Ansprüche, die sich keineswegs auf den italienischen Kulturraum beschränken, sondern in einem gesamteuropäischen Wirkungshorizont situiert sind. Vor diesem Hintergrund verfolgt der Sammelband zwei Ziele. Zum einen möchte er Manzonis Werk als einen spezifisch italienischen Beitrag zur europäischen Identitätsfindung zwischen 1800 und 1900 neu lesen. Zum anderen soll die Produktion des ästhetisch-politischen Mythos Manzonis nördlich der Alpen durchleuchtet werden. Beide Aspekte – sowohl Manzonis Umschrift Europas im Horizont einer poetischen Politik als auch die Aufnahme und das Fortschreiben seiner Programmatik in der gesamteuropäischen Rezeption – sind eng miteinander verknüpft.
