À cet égard, cette deuxième édition s’est efforcée de présenter les conditions et perspectives des récentes crises que l’Europe a dû affronter et continue à gérer, qu’il s’agisse du Brexit ou de la crise pandémique et ses conséquences budgétaires et financières. De surcroît, l’exposé de l’état des réalisations passe par un examen des textes mais également par celui des nuances apportées par la jurisprudence. Enfin, au-delà du caractère très fourni du matériau scientifique qui accompagne les développements, des graphiques ou des définitions permettent de rendre plus clair ce qui peut apparaître complexe. Au total, tout honnête homme désireux de se faire une idée exacte de comment fonctionne cette Union européenne dont paradoxalement il entend peu parler mais qu’il rencontre un peu partout pourra trouver dans cet ouvrage les éléments nécessaires à la formation de sa propre opinion. This collection of essays brings together two major new developments in cultural memory studies: firstly, the shift away from static models of cultural memory, where the emphasis lies on cultural products, in the direction of more dynamic models where the emphasis lies instead on the cultural and social processes involved in the ongoing production of shared views of the past; and secondly, the growing interest in the role of the media, and their role beyond that of mere storage, within these dynamics. English is the language of science today. No matter which languages you know, if you want your work seen, studied, and cited, you need to publish in English. But that hasn’t always been the case. Though there was a time when Latin dominated the field, for centuries science has been a polyglot enterprise, conducted in a number of languages whose importance waxed and waned over time—until the rise of English in the twentieth century. So how did we get from there to here? How did French, German, Latin, Russian, and even Esperanto give way to English? And what can we reconstruct of the experience of doing science in the polyglot past? With Scientific Babel, Michael D.
