Brickmakers written by Selva Almada and has been published by Graywolf Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-02 with Fiction categories.

A piercing and passionate novel, set in rural Argentina, about violence and masculinity Oscar Tamai and Elvio Miranda, the patriarchs of two families of brickmakers, have for years nursed a mutual hatred, but their teenage sons, Pájaro and Ángelito, somehow fell in love. Brickmakers begins as Pájaro and Marciano, Ángelito’s older brother, lie dying in the mud at the base of a Ferris wheel. Inhabiting a dreamlike state between life and death, they recall the events that forced them to pay the price of their fathers’ petty feud. The Tamai and Miranda families are caught, like the Capulets and the Montagues, in an almost mythic conflict, one that emerges from stubborn pride and intractable machismo. Like her heralded debut, The Wind That Lays Waste, Selva Almada’s fierce and tender second novel is an unforgettable portrayal of characters who initially seem to stand in opposition, but are ultimately revealed to be bound by their similarities. Almada enlarges the tradition of some of the most distinctive prose stylists of our time. In Brickmakers, she furthers her extraordinary exploration of masculinity and the realities of working-class rural life. This is another exquisitely written and powerfully told story by a major international voice.

Not A River written by Selva Almada and has been published by Graywolf Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-07 with Fiction categories.

It’s not a river, it’s this river. A hot, motionless afternoon. Enero and El Negro are fishing with Tilo, their dead friend’s teenage son. After hours of struggling with a hooked stingray, Enero aims his revolver into the water and shoots it. They hang the ray’s enormous corpse from a tree at their campsite and let it go to rot, drawing the attention of some local islanders and igniting a long-simmering fury toward outsiders and their carelessness. It’s only the two sisters—the teenage nieces of one of the locals, Aguirre—with their hair black as cowbird feathers and giving off the scent of green grass, who are curious about the trio and invite them to a dance. But the girls are not quite as they seem. As night approaches and tensions rise, Enero and El Negro return to the charged memories of their friend who years ago drowned in this same river. As uneasy and saturated as a prophetic dream, Not a River is another extraordinary novel by Selva Almada about masculinity, guilt, and irrepressible desire, written in a style that is spare and timeless.

Following on from the success of Little One and Son, from the same creative team comes Brothers & Sisters. This lyrical, stunning picture book is a warm-hearted tribute to siblings and their magical bond, with stunning art by award-winning illustrator Sonja Wimmer. It’s true that sometimes we fight when we want to play with the same toys. But when night falls, we snuggle up together and fall asleep while we read fairy tales to each other. We’re similar in so many ways! And we’re different in others. But one thing is for sure, and that is that we’ll always be there to help each other out. It doesn’t matter if stormy nights or evening shadows come to visit us. As long as we are together, we will get through them. We’ve learned so many things together, and discovered that the day and the night, even though they seem so different, form a part of the same melody. Brothers & Sisters is an inclusive picture book, both for boys and girls, for brothers by blood and for brothers of life. Both sisters and brothers appear in this magic tale that will delight the little ones in the house.

Deportes written by José M Alamillo and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-17 with Social Science categories.

Spanning the first half of the twentieth century, Deportes uncovers the hidden experiences of Mexican male and female athletes, teams and leagues and their supporters who fought for a more level playing field on both sides of the border. Despite a widespread belief that Mexicans shunned physical exercise, teamwork or “good sportsmanship,” they proved that they could compete in a wide variety of sports at amateur, semiprofessional, Olympic and professional levels. Some even made their mark in the sports world by becoming the “first” Mexican athlete to reach the big leagues and win Olympic medals or world boxing and tennis titles. These sporting achievements were not theirs alone, an entire cadre of supporters—families, friends, coaches, managers, promoters, sportswriters, and fans—rallied around them and celebrated their athletic success. The Mexican nation and community, at home or abroad, elevated Mexican athletes to sports hero status with a deep sense of cultural and national pride. Alamillo argues that Mexican-origin males and females in the United States used sports to empower themselves and their community by developing and sustaining transnational networks with Mexico. Ultimately, these athletes and their supporters created a “sporting Mexican diaspora” that overcame economic barriers, challenged racial and gender assumptions, forged sporting networks across borders, developed new hybrid identities and raised awareness about civil rights within and beyond the sporting world.
