Down in the valley, God asked the prophet Ezekiel a mighty question: 'Mortal, can these dry bones live?' (Ezekiel 37:3). Today, this question is being posed once more to those who are charged with the preparation and celebration of the Sunday liturgy--the assembly that celebrates, the ministers from within that assembly who prepare and serve, and those ordained as priests or bishops who preside. We have a come a long way since the early days of the conciliar reform of the liturgy: Assemblies respond and sing, the word is proclaimed with dignity and reverence, careful attention is given to environment and season, and all come to the communion table. Many assemblies strive to realize fully week after week the vision of the Council: that the eucharistic liturgy be seen, heard, felt, and smelt as the 'summit toward which the activity of the church is directed . . . the source from which all its power flows.' This is critical work if we are utterly convinced that 'the preeminent manifestation of the church is present in the full, active participation of all God's holy people in these liturgical celebrations.' But many still know liturgical assemblies that are but shadows of who they are called to be and celebrations are slivers of what they could be. Many stand at the brink of the valley and behold dry bones. And when we come to the eucharistic prayer, named the central prayer of the Sunday liturgy, we behold very dry bones indeed. The question is put forth: Can these dry bones live? We have come to realize that liturgy is something people do, something people live. The eucharistic prayer is more than its words: It is a way of praying and living. What lies in the ritual book must be enfleshed when we gather. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695) was the most significant literary figure of the colonial period in Spanish America.The autos sacramentales, or Eucharistic plays are some of her least studied, and most perplexing works. While one of them, El divino Narciso, has received substantial scholarly attention, the other two, El cetro de José and El mártir del Sacramento, San Hermenegildo, have been critically neglected in Sor Juana studies. This study presents a full-length analysis of all three plays, along with their loas, or the introductory pieces alongside which they were intended to be performed. Furthermore, the study seeks to place these works in their philosophical and cultural context by exploring their engagement both with orthodox Catholic sacramental theology, and the emergence of empiricism and the New Philosophy across the Hispanic world. The three sections of this book each present significant new readings of the three plays. The study of El divino Narciso employs a previously little-known source to illuminate its Christological readings, as well as Sor Juana's engagement with notions of wit and conceptism. The analysis of El cetro de José explores her presentation of different approaches to perception to emphasise the importance of both the material and the transcendent to a holistic understanding of the Sacraments. The final section, on San Hermenegildo, explores the influence on the play of the Christianised Stoicism of Justus Lipsius, and demonstrates how Sor Juana used the work to attempt her most ambitious reconciliation of an empirical approach to natural philosophy and the material world with a Neostoic approach to Christian morality and orthodox Catholic sacramental theology.

This volume presents a new approach to Spanish Baroque drama, inspired by Foucauldian discourse archeology, whose rare fusion of meticulous philology and ambitious theory will be exciting and fruitful both for specialists of Spanish literature and for anyone invested in the history of European thought. Detailed readings are dedicated to some of the most prominent plays by Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca, both autos sacramentales (El viaje del alma; El divino Orfeo; La lepra de Constantino) and comedias (El castigo sin venganza; El príncipe constante; El médico de su honra). The "archeological" perspective cast on the plays implies an integration of their discourse-historical "foils", from pagan antiquity through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as well as a discussion of related discourses, mainly theological, philosophical and historiographical. A separate "excursus" suggests a reconsideration of the common manner in which the discursive relation between the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Mannerism and the Baroque is conceptualized.
