Aloe Vera is a semi tropical plant. It is one of the oldest known medicinal plants gifted by nature, Aloe Vera often called Miracle plant known by many names. It contains more than two hundred tonic ingredients including essential amino acids, enzymes, glucose and more. Also contains the most essential components required by the human body. Damit zählt sie zu den ältesten Heilpflanzen der Erde. Täglich tranken die Pharaonen das Aloe Vera Gel, um damit ihr Leben verlängern zu können. Für den längeren Erhalt der Mumien-Körper verwendeten es die Priester des Pharaos auch zur Einbalsamierung. Des Weiteren fand die Pflanze Anwendung in der Kosmetik, sodass Cleopatra ihre Haut täglich mit dem nährenden Saft pflegte, um sie jugendlich straff und elastisch zu halten. Bereits an dieser Stelle wird deutlich wie die bereits genannten Zitate entstanden. Eine Besonderheit von Aloe Vera ist, dass sie in ihren Blättern viel Wasser speichern kann und somit monatelang ohne Regen auskommen kann. Zudem kann sie ihre Wunden (z.B. Schnitte) durch das gelartige Blattgewebe selbstständig verschließen. Logischer kann es kaum sein: Eine Pflanze, die aufgrund ihrer Speicherkapazität mehrere Wochen ohne Flüssigkeit auskommen kann und sich selbst heilen kann, muss auch für die menschliche Haut vorteilhaft sein. Solche Gedankengänge führten dazu, dass sogar Alexander der Große seine eigenen sowie die Kriegsverletzungen seiner Soldaten mit dem Saft der Aloe Vera behandeln ließ. „Sie brachten Blutungen zum Stillstand, beschleunigten die Wundheilung, ohne hässliche Narben zu hinterlassen“ (Finnegan & Otto Schmid 2004). Aufgrund dessen hat er die Insel Sokotra an der Ostküste von Afrika in Besitz genommen, lediglich um im Sinne der Wundheilung über die dort in großer Zahl wachsenden und besonders heilkräftigen Aloepflanzen zu verfügen. Auch Kolumbus führte die Aloe Vera in Töpfen auf seinen Schiffen mit sich, um die Verletzungen der Besatzung behandeln zu können. Zudem lernte er, dass das Gel der Pflanze von den Indianern Südamerikas bei Sonnenbränden und Insektenstichen zur äußeren Anwendung genutzt wurde. Doch was ist dran am Mythos dieser Heilpflanze? Für welche der Anwendungsbereiche gibt es wissenschaftliche Belege und für welche nicht? Im Verlauf dieser Ausarbeitung soll versucht werden auf Fragen wie diese eine Antwort zu finden.
