Esta obra sobre Alonso Pérez de Montalbán, librero-editor madrileño de la primera mitad del siglo XVII, contribuye a la historia de las condiciones previas a la lectura a través de una doble perspectiva; lo que el editor propone en el mercado de libros y lo que el librero vende. El análisis del fondo de librería y del catálogo editorial de Alonso Pérez (en los que la literatura ocupa un sitio preponderante) muestra la trascendencia de la figura del mercader de libros, y cómo la obra literaria es un producto comercial sometido a un mercado. Después de una primera parte centada en la actividad editorial de Alonso Pérez, la segunda se orienta hacia su actividad comercial. La tercera parte contiene las fuentes del trabajo: el catálogo (establecido por la autora) de los libros editados por el librero (un total de 170 obras), con una clasificación cronológica y genérica; y el inventario de su fondo de librería (19.820 volúmenes cuidadosamente identificados), también con una clasificación genérica. Por último, en los Anejos se ofrecen la transcripción de su testamento, el inventario de los libros vendidos a Simón de Vadillo y las dedicatorias y poemas de Alonso Pérez. Este acercamiento novedoso para la historia del libro arroja luz sobre las relaciones entre escritura, edición, comercialización y lectura, y en particular sobre las muy significativas relaciones entre la socio-economía de la edición y la evolución de la vida literaria.

Pornographic Sensibilities stages a conversation between two fields—Medieval/Early Modern Hispanic Studies and Porn Studies—that traditionally have had little to say to each other. The collection offers innovative new approaches to the study of gendered and sexualized bodies in medieval and early modern textual production, including literary and historical documents. The volume’s embrace of the interpretative tools of Porn Studies also inscribes a critical provocation: in what ways can contemporary modes of reading the past serve to freshly illuminate not only the contours of that same past but also the very critical assumptions of the present upon which fields like medieval and early modern Hispanic Studies are built? In this way, Pornographic Sensibilities encourages at once both rigorous historicizations of pre- and early-modern culture, and playful engagement with "presentism," considered here as a critical tool to undress the hidden assumptions of both past and present. This move substantively challenges long-held critical orthodoxies among scholars of pre-Enlightenment periods, for whom the very category of "pornography" itself has often problematically been framed as an anachronism when applied to their work.

In this book on the relationship between pícaro and cortesano, Felipe E. Ruan argues that these two cultural figures are linked by a shared form of deportment centered on prudent self-accommodation. This behavior is generated and governed by a courtly ethos or habitus that emerges as the result of the growth and influence of the court in Madrid. Ruan posits that both pícaro and cortesano, and their respective books, conduct manual and picaresque narrative, tacitly engage questions of identity and individualism by highlighting the valued resources or forms of capital that come to fashion and sustain self-identity. He places the books of the pícaro and cortesano within the larger polemic of early modern identity and individualism, and offers an account of the individual as agent whose actions are grounded on objective social relations, without those actions being simply the result of mechanistic adherence to the social order.

La comedia de La traición en la amistad, primera obra de María de Zayas y Sotomayor, inédita en vida de la autora, permaneció en un manuscrito del siglo XVII hasta su publicación en 1905. La Introducción y estudio de la comedia, seguido de la cuidadosa edición anotada de la obra, demuestra que gran parte de la crítica contemporánea es anacrónica e influenciada por el feminismo de la autora de sus Novelas amorosas y Desengaños. Si Zayas pretendió asumir una postura feminista en la obra, se vio impedida por las rígidas convenciones del género. Esta edición incluye un estudio biográfico novedoso y actualizado. Se desvela, entre otros datos, que llegó a tener una deuda con un afamado librero. Concluye con una investigación de archivo de cuyos resultados puede deducirse que probablemente estuvo casada y quedó viuda en un tiempo anterior a la publicación de sus obras.

The nature of book production and distribution in this period resulted in the development of a truly international market. The integration of the book market was facilitated by networks of printers and booksellers, who were responsible for the connection of distant places, as well as local producers and merchants. At the same time, due to the particular nature of books, political and religious institutions intervened in book markets. Printers and booksellers lived in a politically fragmented world where religious boundaries often shifted. Editing and literature in Spain (XVI and XVII) is a collection of seventeen articles by leading specialists in Spanish literature of the Golden Age and history of literacy. As part of a multidisciplinary reflection conditions are studied jointly publication and dissemination of literary works in the Golden Age and the significance of the texts. The interest in the materiality of the old book in its more technical various aspects sheds light on the conditions of production and reception of texts. This reflection on editorial practice in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and in particular on the role of author and involvement of the different actors and actions on the text, are some of the main issues addressed. Also the role of the physical space of the old book in the study of textuality is questioned, in order to highlight the set of elements that influence reading and promote access to meaning. Besides the attempt to reconstitute the passage of text printing, the book is a reflection on the issue of golden works today, taking into account the new dissemination tools.
