Als Folge des Ersten Weltkriegs und den daraus resultierenden Friedensverträgen war die Bevölkerung von fünf Grenzgebieten, die bisher von mindestens zwei Nationalstaaten beansprucht wurden, dazu aufgerufen, ihre national-territoriale Zugehörigkeit durch Volksabstimmungen selbst festzulegen. In den Grenzregionen Schleswig, Ost-/Westpreußen, Kärnten, Oberschlesien und dem Burgenland sollten die Abstimmungsberechtigten in den Jahren 1920/21 sich jeweils durch ihre Stimmabgabe klar für einen der beiden zur Wahl stehenden Nationalstaaten und damit für eine nationale Zugehörigkeit entscheiden. In allen Abstimmungsregionen setzte unmittelbar nach Bekanntwerden der friedensvertraglich geregelten Volksabstimmungen eine rege Agitationsarbeit ein. In der vorliegende Arbeit wird erstmals eine vergleichende Zusammenschau von Bildpropagandamaterial aus allen fünf Abstimmungsregionen durchgeführt. Das Quellenmaterial, bestehend aus Plakaten, Postkarten, Notgeldscheinen, Illustrationen und Briefmarken, wird dabei einander gegenübergestellt und vergleichend hinsichtlich der Fragestellung analysiert, wie in bildlicher Propaganda nationale Identität konstruiert wurde. Anhand von einzelnen Motiven und Motivgruppen wird die Bildpropaganda als Träger von Diskursen analysiert. Hier zeigen sich Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der zeitgenössischen Auffassungen von Nation und nationaler Identität. Der komparative Ansatz der Arbeit zeigt darüber hinaus, wie Bildmotive verwendet worden sind, um Identität zu konstruieren und wie unterschiedliche Formen von nationaler und regionaler Identität gegeneinander positioniert und hierarchisiert worden sind.

Plebiscites, or referendums, are epitomes of direct democracy and the right of self-determination. While direct democracy has always been a key subject in the theory and practice of western liberal democracies, the issue of self-determination has been propelled to the fore by the hegemonistic moves of Russia. By providing a historical analysis of the post-World War One plebiscites, this book deals with enduring, painfully contemporary, and in in any case fundamental, concepts. The contributors to this edited volume approach the referendums comparatively. After grounding the analysis theoretically, the authors look at detailed aspects of individual cases, with the two plebiscites held in the Danish-German border region of Schleswig in the winter of 1920 as points of departure. They then extend the exploration through the inter-war period and address the effects of border delimitations on everyday life or gender roles in the context of ethnic mobilization. Finally, the book places the post-World War One plebiscites in a long-term perspective. The concluding essays assess, among others, the applicability of plebiscitary solutions to contemporary conflicts, taking into consideration issues of borders, religion, language, identity, and minority rights.

This book considers competing memory politics in European border towns after the First and Second World Wars. In the twentieth century Europe’s borders shifted dramatically in the wake of war, and towns were often moved from one state to another despite their physical locations remaining unchanged. Urban spaces adapted to incorporate new place names, monuments, and requirements, overlaid onto the cultural heritage of previous settlers. This book investigates how the memories of different ethnic groups compete and sometimes contest with each other in the town’s space, using the case studies of Vyborg/Viipuri in present-day Russia, Klaipėda/Memel in Lithuania, Szczecin/Stettin in Poland, Flensburg in Germany, Trieste in Italy, and Rijeka/Fiume in Croatia. The book considers how public memories are built and how old traditions are moulded to new forms in urban settings. Drawing on perspectives from across borderland, urban, and memory studies, this book will be an important resource for researchers with an interest in Europe, and in how urban memories are constructed and contested.
