Si les besoins en matière de dialogue territorial sont de mieux en mieux identifiés, les formations sont rares. Quels objectifs, quels contenus et quels dispositifs peut-on envisager pour former des animateurs au dialogue territorial ? Quelles spécificités la formation au dialogue territorial présente-t-elle par rapport aux formations existantes ? C'est à toutes ces questions que se sont efforcés de répondre des chercheurs, des praticiens et des formateurs lors de la conférence de consensus qui s'est déroulée de mars à octobre 2005, puis lors du séminaire des 20 et 21 octobre 2005 qui s'est tenu au lycée agricole de Périgueux. Dans une première partie, une quinzaine de participants tentent de définir les objectifs, les contenus et les dispositifs d'une formation des animateurs du dialogue territorial. Dans une deuxième partie, de nouvelles questions viennent affiner les réponses données, en essayant de définir quelle place donner à la connaissance du territoire, quelle peut être la durée et le contenu d'une formation au dialogue territorial, quels peuvent être les outils ou méthodes, et les qualités personnelles requises. Toutes ces questions ont permis d'aboutir à une liste de thèmes plus précis, qui ont été traités lors du séminaire final. Ces travaux font l'objet de la troisième partie de cet ouvrage. Cette conférence de consensus et le séminaire final ont ainsi permis de dégager quelques points essentiels qui peuvent être retenus comme base consensuelle, tout en permettant de repérer les éventuels points de dissension et de dessiner des pistes de réflexion et de poursuite opérationnelle du travail engagé lors de cette démarche. L'enseignement agricole, parce qu'il est au cœur du monde rural, qu'il est légitime vis-à-vis des agriculteurs, mais aussi des autres acteurs locaux, peut occuper une place privilégiée et jouer un rôle essentiel dans les dynamiques sociales en cours, en étant à la fois une structure médiatrice et un support pour la formation à la médiation.
