PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION. Two years use of Franklin and Williamsons Elements of Al- ternating Currents, and many valuable suggestions from friends, make it possible to issue a greatly improved edition, which is now offered to the public. It is not expected that this text will be found easy reading, but it is certain that any one of moderate ability can gain by serious study of this text a clear understand- ing of the principles of alternating currents and of the theory of the various types of alternating current machinery. Aside from the minor changes which occur on almost every page of the book, this new edition differs from the old in having a very complete series of practical problems with answers. The alterations in the chapters on the Alternator, on the Transformer, on the Synchronous Motor, on the Rotary Converter and on the Induction Motor, are especially noteworthy. The last five chapters have been added to give the student a general description of some of the ordinary types of alternating current apparatus and the conditions under which it is operated. These chapters are intended to be read in connection with the corresponding chapters that treat on the theory of the apparatus under consideration. The authors thanks are due to Professor Morgan Brooks for many valuable suggestions, to Messrs. C. M. Crawford and H. W. Brown for assistance in preparing copy, in solving problems and in reading proof, and to the manufacturing companies who have kindly furnished a number of the cuts used in the chapters that have been added. Excerpt from Practical Alternating Currents and Alternating Current Testing This volume deals in an elementary and practical manner with the principles of alternating currents and alternating-current machinery. It is hoped that it may prove of special use to students in technical schools and colleges in connection with their laboratory work, and to young engineers engaged in handling or testing alternating-current machinery. The writer hopes that the book may also appeal to a wider range of readers who wish to gain some practical insight into alternating-current working. He believes that the experimental method of treatment is for this purpose the one best fitted to convey exact and concrete ideas, even to the student who is unable himself to carry out the measurements described. He has thus aimed at producing a text-book on the principles of alternating-current working, as well as a companion to the laboratory or test house. The experiments are described in great detail, so as to enable the conclusions derived from them to be followed by the reader who has not the means for obtaining experimental results of his own. It will be seen that the use of the higher mathematics has been avoided, except in the final chapter on curve analysis, and, as far as possible, a treatment based on actual results and examples has been employed. With regard to the selection of the experiments, some of the earlier ones have been given mainly for the sake of the principles involved, or as exercises in calculation. Excerpt from The Principles of Alternating Currents This book has been developed from the lecture notes of the author, as given in the second year's work in Alternating Currents, in the night school at Drexel Institute. For this reason the text has been so arranged that the calculus proofs may be omitted. After six years of teaching experience with day and evening students, the author is of the firm belief that alternating currents should as far as possible be taught graphically; and therefore vector diagrams are extensively used and always drawn so that current is used as the reference axis in series circuits, and voltage as the reference axis in parallel circuits. Instead of a large number of manufacturers' cuts, many of which become antiquated if a book is not revised every two or three years, the author uses about one hundred lantern slides, which are constantly added to at slight expense. The author has found from experience that the average stu dent's knowledge of vectors is insufficient for a graphical method of treating alternating currents, and has therefore added Chapter I. Over two hundred problems are given, nearly all of which have answers. Many principles which the student should be able to work out are given in the form of problems.
