The Swedish auto industry has developed a distinct production design and work organization, exploring alternatives to the assembly line and to the traditional shop-floor hierarchy, with a model of teamwork that increases independent decision making and elicits strong union commitment. Berggren evaluates in detail the reorganization of work within the Swedish auto industry from 1970 to 1990. In his introduction to the new edition, he explores the significance of Volvo's decision to close its two most innovative plants.

This guide to taking your enterprise lean focuses on the steps that management and workers must collectively adopt to transform any organization into a lean operation. While everyone agrees that reducing waste in a factory is a good thing, one must first learn how to recognize bottlenecks, poorly designed workstations, workflow disruptions, and other roadblocks to productivity: then, clear, decisive steps to remove these and all other forms of waste from the factory must be taken. In Implementing Lean Manufacturing Techniques: Making Your System Lean and Living With It, Julian Page draws on experience gained in a wide range of manufacturing environments to provide modern lean alternatives to traditional factory methods. His techniques are fully detailed, practical, workable, durable, and proven in real-life applications, and they are accompanied by step-by-step implementation and evaluation guidelines. Most importantly, the author shows that actions are not enough, the workforce must be taught to accept lean, not have it forced upon them. Examples are provided where necessary, and useful tips and words of caution help guide the reader through sequential steps to becoming lean.

The Lean concepts and principles described in this book have revolutionized manufacturing practice and business conduct in a manner similar to what Henry Ford’s system did for mass manufacturing. Lean production however, involves much more than the adoption of methods and procedures, it requires a change in management philosophy that emphasizes relationship building, trust, and responsibility being conferred to frontline workers and suppliers. Based on three decades of teaching experience, Lean Production for a Competitive Advantage: A Comprehensive Guide to Lean Methodologies and Management Practices introduces the Lean philosophy and illustrates the effective application of Lean tools with real-world case studies. From fundamental concepts to integrated planning and control in pull production and the supply chain, the text provides a complete introduction to Lean production. Coverage includes small batch production, setup reduction, pull production, preventive maintenance, standard operations, as well as synchronizing and scheduling lean operations. Detailing the key principles and practices of Lean production, the text also: Illustrates effective implementation techniques with case studies from a range of industries Includes questions and completed problems in each chapter Explains how to effectively partner with suppliers and employees to accomplish productivity goals Designed for students who have a basic foundation in production and operations management, the text provides a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of Lean. It also offers practical know-how for implementing a culture of continuous improvement on the shop floor or in the office, creating a heightened sense of responsibility and pride in all stakeholders involved, and enhancing productivity and efficiency to improve the bottom line. This text aims to present and discuss the innovative Volvo Uddevalla plant, comparing it to other plants - Japanese lean ones and others. The starting point for the book is Volvo's dramatic decision to close its Uddevalla and Kalmar plants, and the debate that followed this decision, both in Sweden and abroad. Both plants were pioneers of the possibilities to unite productivity and the good work, but, following the announcement of their closure, researchers and practitioners in the field of industrial organization from many countries asked why they closed, how they compared with other production concepts, and whether we now see an end of an alternative to Japanese lean production.

Lean Manufacturing is widely accepted as a proven method to achieve operational excellence. Many manufacturers undertake lean manufacturing implementations as a strategy to improve competitiveness and realize business objectives. However, despite the wealth of literature on the success of lean manufacturing, it should not be viewed as a panacea for every business situation. A key challenge is to estimate the true benefits that a lean implementation is likely to provide, and compare them to the requirements of the business. This thesis provides a framework for such an analysis in the context of the Detroit Forge facility of American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc (AAM). AAM has been facing some significant challenges in the recent past, including skyrocketing steel prices, the prospect of declining sales and contractually fixed labour costs. AAM has launched a corporate wide lean manufacturing initiative to eliminate waste from its plants, and to make them more competitive. The actual improvement achievable at each plant will vary depending upon the current state of the plant, the nature of the operations and type of equipment used.
