The Sandbox Investment written by David L. Kirp and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-30 with Education categories.

Listen to a short interview with David L. Kirp Host: Chris Gondek | Producer: Heron & Crane The rich have always valued early education, and for the past forty years, millions of poor kids have had Head Start. Now, more and more middle class parents have realized that a good preschool is the smartest investment they can make in their children's future in a competitive world. As The Sandbox Investment shows, their needs are key to the growing call for universal preschool. Writing with the verve of a magazine journalist and the authority of a scholar, David L. Kirp makes the ideal guide to this quiet movement. He crouches in classrooms where committed teachers engage lively four-year-olds, and reveals the findings of an extraordinary longitudinal study that shows the life-changing impact of preschool. He talks with cutting-edge researchers from neuroscience and genetics to economics, whose findings increasingly show how powerfully early childhood shapes the arc of children's lives. Kids-first politics is smart economics: paying for preschool now can help save us from paying for unemployment, crime, and emergency rooms later. As Kirp reports from the inside, activists and political leaders have turned this potent idea into campaigns and policies in red and blue states alike. The Sandbox Investment is the first full story of a campaign that asks Americans to endorse a vision of society that does well by doing good. For anyone who is interested in politics or the social uses of research--for anyone who's interested in the children's futures--it's a compelling read.

Preparing Parent Leaders As Co Instructors In Higher Learning For Teacher Education written by Mary L Johnson and has been published by IAP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-01 with Education categories.

This book is a first person narrative from a parent/community advocate. Examining my personal experiences as a parent of color in a Higher Learning Institute, I highlight some of the frustrations experienced by urban working class parents of color as they attempt to engage teachers in their community’s schools. I underscore the importance of one community organization in Los Angeles, called Parent U-Turn that works to equip novice teachers for the challenges they will face. Parent-U-Turn offers outreach strategies focused not only on improving “parenting skills” to parents but also on providing teachers with the tools and skills they need to effectively advocate and outreach to urban families and their children. I conclude by presenting seven strategies for novice teachers who want to improve and be successful in urban schools. The majority of these strategies are grounded in my own personal experiences, thus are action research based. In addition to my experiences with my own children, I draw upon my experiences working with Teacher Of America, UCLA Center X Teacher ED Program and parents in LAUSD and Lynwood USD to promote activism by parents so that their voices are heard for the benefit of low-income children. The seven stages of teacher strategies seek to create a new model and perspectives for teacher preparation programs that include all teachers in our ethnically and linguistically diverse schools/communities for the 21st Century.

The Unemployed Grad, provides over 50 tips ideas and strategies that will help parents of college students and grads be a resource to their grad in their first professional job search. The author reminds parents that it's highly likely their student will never visit the career center because it's not a required activity at college. With 80 percent of the graduating classes since 2008 being unemployed on graduation day, and the average grad taking nearly 8 months to find a job, the author suggests parents have to step in and require students to take ownership of their career. The book is loaded with stats, facts and compelling evidence by industry sources that support the fact that students that invest time and effort in managing their career while they are in college end up with the internships, jobs and higher pay. The 300 page book shares with parents common mistakes first time job seekers will make, highlights proven strategies to use Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter and other Internet strategies to get jobs and offers a dozen "Soft Skills" students should develop if they want to stand out in a crowded job market. As a result students are encouraged to visit their career center frequently and network with alumni. Parents are encouraged to take the role of career coach and work with their student to make sure they explore career opportunities, develop a career plan and job search strategies. The book includes a 40 page workbook and access to additional career resources for parents, students and grads. Parents of students just entering college, parents of students in college and parents of grads will find this book will help them develop healthy career behaviors, attitudes and strategies.
