Si può insegnare a progettare? Qual è il paradigma che racchiude la sfera teorica e quella applicativo-esperienziale proprie della disciplina dell’architettura? L’architettura è disciplina eteronoma, che trova le sue ragioni nell’ibridazione e contaminazione dei saperi. La formazione dell’architetto, intellettuale e figura tecnica, richiede una riflessione profonda e radicale sui fondamenti dei percorsi formativi, l’attualità dei modelli di insegnamento e gli strumenti di apprendimento. Le Scuole di Architettura rappresentano l’ambito in cui lo studente, riprendendo le parole di Louis I. Kahn, è chiamato a riflettere su tutto ciò che viene scambiato e sulla sua utilità. In quanto luogo di apprendimento, sperimentazione e verifica delle tecniche e degli strumenti più avanzati di una disciplina, le istituzioni dovranno necessariamente aprire a un confronto critico il proprio progetto culturale e didattico, in una logica di arricchimento degli orizzonti e di visione internazionale. La Scuola, luogo di produzione di conoscenza e trasformazione del sapere, mira alla formazione di laureati competenti nel campo dell’ideazione, progettazione, costruzione e gestione dell’architettura: figure in grado di affrontare la sfida della complessità del progetto, inteso come atto di sintesi di competenze. L’approccio politecnico si pone quale chiave per la formazione di professionalità riconoscibili, complementari, sinergiche nei confronti di uno scenario professionale e produttivo in evoluzione che richiede capacità e strumenti finalizzati a operare in modo flessibile, in sintonia con le istanze della contemporaneità. Il confronto tra realtà d’eccellenza nel panorama europeo caratterizzate da una comune matrice politecnica, la Scuola di Architettura Urbanistica Ingegneria delle Costruzioni (AUIC) del Politecnico di Milano e la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM) della Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, rappresenta un momento di riflessione mirato a innescare un dialogo attivo e costruttivo su metodi e strumenti dell’insegnamento dell’architettura.

È strutturato in due parti: un vademecum, che illustra il nesso fra teoria e progetto in architettura attraverso l’analisi del pensiero occidentale, dall’evo moderno fino alle soglie della rivoluzione informatica del XX secolo (anni Ottanta del Novecento); e un dialogo dell’autore con Paolo Portoghesi sulla natura dell’architettura, sull’insegnamento, sul mestiere, sulla Scuola. Finalità del volume è aiutare i giovani allievi a disegnare mappe culturali in cui posizionarsi nell’epoca della globalizzazione, in cui la straordinaria potenza dei computer e dei software parametrico-variazionali hanno generato, in assenza di modelli culturali sedimentati, un ribaltamento di ruolo, da mezzo a fine dell’azione progettuale. Non è forse fuor di luogo paragonare le giovani (e meno giovani) generazioni di architetti di oggi ad “apprendisti stregoni” incapaci di controllare fino in fondo ciò che il calcolatore è in grado di generare. Una condizione permanente di “fuori controllo”, il cui risultato è: il predominio dei nuovi materiali sul linguaggio, la perdita del “filo a piombo” (statica ed estetica si trovano adesso in campi avversi), la preminenza dell’icona rispetto al programma funzionale (destinazione dell’edificio), la dissoluzione dell’oggetto architettonico nel “paesaggio” , la atopia, la crisi della tettonica come antefatto logico dell’architettura e l’asservimento della firmitas, della utilitas, della venustas a una “forma predeterminata”. Una condizione che la copertina del volume interpreta con la “scomposizione” del frontespizio dell’Essai sur l’Architecture dell’abate Laugier, un invito a ricomporre l’infranto.

The School of Mathematics is a masterpiece of the early 1930s by Gio Ponti, who is today regarded as a master of Italian Modernism. Although World War II bombings shattered the coloured stained-glass window that once adorned the balanced and harmonious white travertine façade, the building remains a striking and significant piece of architecture. Although it underwent a series of transformations over the years before its historical and artistic relevance was recognised, it can still be appreciated and admired for its magnificent expressivity.
