National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist Best Book of Fall (Esquire) and a Most Anticipated Book of 2021 (Lit Hub) What Has Happened to Fiction in the Age of Platform Capitalism? Since it was first launched in 1994, Amazon has changed the world of literature. The “Everything Store” has not just transformed how we buy books; it has affected what we buy, and even what we read. In Everything and Less, acclaimed critic Mark McGurl explores this new world where writing is no longer categorized as high or lowbrow, literature or popular fiction. Charting a course spanning from Henry James to E. L. James, McGurl shows that contemporary writing has less to do with writing per se than with the manner of its distribution. This consumerist logic—if you like this, you might also like ...—has reorganized the fiction universe so that literary prize-winners sit alongside fantasy, romance, fan fiction, and the infinite list of hybrid genres and self-published works. This is an innovation to be cautiously celebrated. Amazon’s platform is not just a retail juggernaut but an aesthetic experiment driven by an unseen algorithm rivaling in the depths of its effects any major cultural shift in history. Here all fiction is genre fiction, and the niches range from the categories of crime and science fiction to the more refined interests of Adult Baby Diaper Lover erotica. Everything and Less is a hilarious and insightful map of both the commanding heights and sordid depths of fiction, past and present, that opens up an arresting conversation about why it is we read and write fiction in the first place.

Poetry. "Nicomedes Suarez-Arauz, Amazonian poet extraordinaire, has fashioned a collection of poems unique in the poetry of Latin America. Upon entering the poems of EDIBLE AMAZONIA the reader encounters abundant images, enticing flavors and, even more remarkable, a path brimming with fauna, trees, flowers and symbols that exhort us to the possibilities of delight that is the domain of true poetry. These texts are exquisite and enthrall the senses and palate with their allusiveness. In them, imagination and poetry conjoin to create a disturbing, graceful and mysterious language that ushers us into magic, myth, and dream"-from prologue by Marjorie Agosin.

Cage written by Astrid Cabral and has been published by Host Publications, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Literary Criticism categories.

Poetry. Translated from the Portuguese by Alexis Levitin. In this first-ever bilingual edition of CAGE, eminent Brazilian poet Astrid Cabral is an insightful and irreverent guide to the natural world, leading the beguiled reader through landscapes of rare and surprising beauty. From serpents to seahorses, and from the wilds of the Amazon to the orderly realm of suburbia, these poems urge us to consider our surroundings with empathy and attentiveness. Cabral's complex, multifaceted verse glints with compressed energy, offering a densely layered vision in which simplicity is deceptive and conclusions are likely to be double-edged. A poet of considerable imaginative gifts and metaphysical flair, Astrid Cabral has produced a work of cauterizing beauty. In this perfectly orchestrated volume, each poem enriches and expands the poems that surround it.

Plant Theory In Amazonian Literature written by Juan R. Duchesne Winter and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-09 with Social Science categories.

This book discusses new developments of plant studies and plant theory in the humanities and compares them to the exceptionally robust knowledge about plant life in indigenous traditions practiced to this day in the Amazonian region. Amazonian thinking, in dialogue with the thought of Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, Emanuele Coccia and others, can serve to bring plant theory in the humanities beyond its current focus on how the organic existence of plants is projected into culture. Contemporary Amazonian indigenous literature takes us beyond conventional theory and into the unsuspected reaches of vegetal networks. It shows that what matters about plants are not just their strictly biological and ecological projections, but the manner in which they interact with multiple species and cultural actors in continuously shifting bodies and points of view, by becoming-other, and fashioning a natural and social diplomacy in which humans participate along with non-humans.

Community Forest Management In The Peruvian Amazon written by Rosa Cossío and has been published by CIFOR this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-19 with categories.

This review summarizes the published literature, as well as any available information provided by NGOs or project proponents, on the practice of community forest management (CFM) in the Peruvian Amazon. It provides an overview of literature related to land-use and forest management by rural populations in the Peruvian Amazon, placing this information in the broader context of the forestry sector in Peru. The review describes the different manifestations of CFM in Peru and the most widely studied cases of CFM projects. The document also examines some emerging initiatives, summarizes the main challenges for CFM and highlights important areas for future research. One key finding of this review is that there is a general lack of scientific analyses of CFM in Peru: most information is available only via project reports prepared by project proponents and/or donors. The review stresses that community forest management takes many forms. People throughout the Amazon have long relied on forest resources for their shifting cultivation systems, and timber and NTFPs are central to the livelihoods of many. Typically, forest use has occurred informally with little oversight or control by the state. Beginning in the 1980s, environmental NGOs have introduced CFM initiatives in Peru. To date, most CFM projects focus only on indigenous communities to support timber management; by contrast, scientific studies have focused on forest use within subsistence livelihood systems. Given that there are approximately 2 million non-indigenous rural Amazonians in Peru, the forest footprint and market impacts of non-indigenous smallholder forest management are likely to be much greater than recognized. However, very little is known about these endogenous smallholder-led systems. More research is needed to increase our understanding of the heterogeneity of these systems and the opportunities and challenges that they represent.

Amazonia written by James Marcus and has been published by The New Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-10 with Business & Economics categories.

A “funny, contemplative” memoir of working at Amazon in the early years, when it was a struggling online bookstore (San Francisco Chronicle). In a book that Ian Frazier has called “a fascinating and sometimes hair-raising morality tale from deep inside the Internet boom,” James Marcus, hired by Amazon.com in 1996—when the company was so small his e-mail address could be [email protected]—looks back at the ecstatic rise, dramatic fall, and remarkable comeback of the consummate symbol of late 1990s America. Observing “how it was to be in the right place (Seattle) at the right time (the ’90s)” (Chicago Reader), Marcus offers a ringside seat on everything from his first interview with Jeff Bezos to the company’s bizarre Nordic-style retreats, in “a clear-eyed, first-person account, rife with digressions on the larger cultural meaning throughout” (Henry Alford, Newsday). “Marcus tells his story with wit and candor.” —Booklist, starred review
