Das Ambivalenzkonzept selbst blieb allerdings weitgehend ungeklärt. Der Sammelband zieht eine Forschungsbilanz und diskutiert Chancen und Gefahren des Paradigmas. Ausgangspunkt ist die Frage, ob es sich bei ›Ambivalenz‹ um eine literaturwissenschaftliche Metakategorie oder um ein historisches Gattungskriterium handelt. Kann man das Nebeneinander unterschiedlicher Forschungsperspektiven als Ausdruck jener Ambivalenzen begreifen, die den Spielen selbst eingeschrieben sind, oder spiegeln sich hierin nur die Aporien der Metaebene? In der Einleitung und den vierzehn Fallstudien, die von den Anfängen des mittelalterlichen Theaters bis in die Frühe Neuzeit reichen, werden Phänomen und Begriff der Ambivalenz untersucht und Aufgaben künftiger Forschung ausgelotet.

Otto Höfler (1901–1987) was an Austrian Germanist and Scandinavist. His research on ‘Germanic culture’, in particular on Germanic Männerbünde (men’s bands), was controversial and remains a topic of academic debate. In modern discourse, Höfler’s theories are often fundamentally rejected on account of his involvement in the National Socialist movement and his contribution to the research initiatives of the SS Ahnenerbe, or they are adopted by scholars who ignore his problematic methodologies and the ideological and political elements of his work. The present study takes a comprehensive approach to Höfler’s research on ‘Germanic culture’ and analyses his characterisation of the ‘Germanic peoples’, contextualising his research in the backdrop of German philological studies of the early twentieth century and highlighting elements of his theories that are still the topic of modern academic discourse. A thorough analysis of his main research theses, focusing on his Männerbund-research, reveals that his concept of ‘Germanic culture’ is underscored by a belief in the deep-seated religiosity of the ‘Germanic peoples’ formed through sacred-daemonic forces.

Jan Huizinga and Roger Caillois have already taught us to realize how important games and play have been for pre-modern civilization. Recent research has begun to acknowledge the fundamental importance of these aspects in cultural, religious, philosophical, and literary terms. This volume expands on the traditional approach still very much focused on the materiality of game (toys, cards, dice, falcons, dolls, etc.) and acknowledges that game constituted also a form of coming to terms with human existence in an unstable and volatile world determined by universal randomness and fortune. Whether considering blessings or horse fighting, falconry or card games, playing with dice or dolls, we can gain a much deeper understanding of medieval and early modern society when we consider how people pursued pleasure and how they structured their leisure time. The contributions examine a wide gamut of approaches to pleasure, considering health issues, eroticism, tournaments, playing music, reading and listening, drinking alcohol, gambling and throwing dice.
