Seit jeher ist der Mensch von der Wunderwelt der Pflanzen fasziniert. Sie sind ihm nicht nur Nahrung und Rohstoff zahlreicher Produkte, sondern er bedient sich ihrer auch als Quelle künstlerischer Inspirationen. Schon in den ältesten Kulturen begegnen uns Pflanzen und ihre Teile – vor allem die Blüten und Früchte – als ästhetisches Objekt, sei es als Ornament oder als realistisches Abbild. Und bereits in der Antike, vor allem aber seit der Renaissance zeigt sich auch zunehmend ein wissenschaftliches Interesse an der Flora in ihrer schier unerschöpflichen Vielfalt. So legten im 16. Jahrhundert die Pioniere der Botanik den Grundstein zur enzyklopädischen Erfassung und Erforschung der Vegetation, indem sie die bislang ungeordnete Pflanzenwelt klassifizierten, deren Familien und Arten bestimmten sowie ihre Nutzbarkeit analysierten. Dieser Prozess ist sogar heute noch nicht abgeschlossen und hatte immer auch Rückwirkungen auf die Kunst. Die in der Blütezeit der botanischen Illustration im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert entstandenen wissenschaftlichen Porträts von Pflanzen, Blüten und Früchten etwa waren ästhetisch derart anspruchsvoll, dass sie sich in prachtvollen Arrangements der Malerei, Graphik oder Bildhauerkunst und nicht zuletzt in der Mode, dem Kunsthandwerk und dem Design wiederfanden. Der Begleitband einer Ausstellung im Neuen Museum Biel (Schweiz) will an ausgewählten Beispielen die enge Wechselwirkung zwischen botanischer Wissenschaft und den verschiedenen Kunstgattungen beleuchten. Und weil sie hier einen Sammlungsschwerpunkt bildet, steht die botanische Illustration mit ihren verschiedenen Anwendungsbereichen im Zentrum der Betrachtung.
