Staging Gertrude Stein written by Leslie Atkins Durham and has been published by Palgrave Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-10-14 with Performing Arts categories.

Gertrude Stein's dramatic texts rely on the absence of many landmarks of traditional theater, but absence is a very difficult thing to stage. Iconoclastic directors and production teams-including Virgil Thomson, the Living Theatre, the Judson Poets Theatre, the Santa Fe Opera, the Glimmerglass Opera, the Wooster Group, Robert Wilson, Anne Bogart, Frank Galati and Heiner Goebbels-have ardently roamed Stein's spare dramatic "landscapes," but even these convention-defying artists had to fill some of her absences in order to bring the texts to life on stage. Inevitably contemporary culture infiltrates Stein's pristine topography via these extra-textual additions, transforming it in ways virtually unimaginable when the reader encounters the text on the printed page. It is only by mapping the intersections of written text, performance text, and context, that one can gain a full appreciation of what Stein's dramatic writing has meant at various historical moments, how she herself has been imagined, and how her writing has transformed the landscape of the American alternative theater.

David Weinberg argues that American experimental theatre practice was one key factor in the development of an important phase in the history of the alternative theatre movement in Britain during the period 1956-1980. His analysis draws on key concepts and theories in the work of Elizabeth Burns (1972) and Baz Kershaw (1992, 1999). The main historical developments he covers are the activities of the experimental theatre groups associated with Jim Haynes, Charles Marowitz, Nancy Meckler, and Ed Berman, four expatriate American theatre practitioners living in Britain during the time period 1956-1980. In addition, he also examines important American-based groups-Living Theatre (1947), Open Theatre (1964), La MaMa (1960), and Bread and Puppet (1965) -which performed in Britain and which made an impact during the same period, as well as a wide range of indigenous British groups-Pip Simmons (1968), Foco Novo (1972-1989), Joint Stock (1974-1989)-, institutions-RSC (1961), Royal Court (1956)-, and individuals such as Max Stafford-Clark, Thelma Holt, John Arden, Ann Jellicoe, and the Portable playwrights (1968-1972) which in one way or another were influenced by American exemplars. Weinberg's study is essential reading for everyone seeking a more comprehensive and dynamic understanding of the forces which shaped the alternative theatre movement in Britain.

This dissertation shows that alternative theatre and film histories are interconnected and should be reevaluated along the cross-media collaborations of European and American political avant-garde traditions. By focusing on the film and theatre of playwright and director Richard Foreman, the intermedial work of the Wooster Group, and the theatre, film, and video work of director Peter Sellars, I demonstrate that the complexities and politics of how we construct histories of performance and media are enmeshed with the distinct cultural, social, and political work these artists engage in through theatre and film. Returning again and again to the avant-garde antecedents that have influenced their work, these artistic collaborations serve as models of the webs of meaning that support the poetics of what Hayden White described as the "historical imagination." History and memory serve as raw material for animating archival materials through intermedial experiments using new media technologies. Drawing together complex constellations of texts and meanings, I argue that these artists reflect the shifting boundaries of time and space through their work. Film becomes an extension of the theatrical aesthetic and past and present are juxtaposed in complex networks of meaning. This project expands on the processes of history-making to include the experimental mindset that drives avant-garde creation itself, and I argue that the radical impulses that have guided these alternative artists should be restored. Histories are worked and reworked, transfigured into new patterns that reveal the deeper meanings below the surface, in the spaces between the past, the present, and the future.
