‘This is essential reading for anybody interested in global history.’ —Professor Ugo Panizza, The Graduate Institute of Geneva, Switzerland This illuminating book offers a compact survey and new interpretation of trends and policies in the US economy from the end of the nineteenth century to the initial period of the Trump administration. Valli maps three stages in this period of US economic history: first, the economic and demographic consequences of the frontier; second, the Fordist model of growth; and third, the attempt to build an economic empire through economic and financial globalization, military and political power and rapid technological progress. Examining pivotal moments from the Wall Street Crash and the World Wars to the recent Great Recession, Obamacare and Trump's electoral promises and first controversial decisions, this book is essential reading for all those interested in American economic power and its future.

"Describes challenges associated with the increasing use of coercive economic measures to tackle security challenges. These challenges include both changes to the structure of international financial system that might make it harder to use these tools in the future and a degradation of these measures' integrity and availability derived from court contests, among other factors. The authors recommend principles by which the United States and its allies can keep these measures sharp, nimble, and effective in countering adversaries and threats in the future"--Publisher's web site.

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: USA, grade: 1,3, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut f r Sozialwissenschaften), 133 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Power - and especially economic power - is one of the least researched concepts in International Relations, yet it is arguably one of the most central phenomena for this academic discipline. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, the goal is to shed some light on the obscure concept of economic power and to illuminate its many facets and varieties. One of the most important aspects will certainly be the introduction of the concept of structural power as developed by Strange. Subsequently, the insights about economic power shall be applied to the international position of the United States as it has developed since the early 1970s. This point in time has been chosen because it marks a fundamental break in the international political economy since the end of World War II, according to Helleiner and other observers. The government-led Bretton Woods system with its inherent fixed exchange rates and its intended confinement of finance to the domestic realm was effectively terminated by the US in the early 1970s. Instead, a market-led 'non-system' characterised by free floating exchange rates emerged in the field of international finance. The academic and political relevance of this study lies in the fact that historically the demise of great powers - and the parallel rise of competitors - nearly always caused intense and violent conflict in the system of international relations. In addition, the pre-dominance (or hegemony) of states since the 17th century derived in a large part from their economic, and especially their financial power. This, in turn, is why this study seeks to find whether or not US economic power has been in decline since the 1970s.

America Rising written by David Felix and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-28 with Business & Economics categories.

The United States became a great power in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and a superpower during World War II without quite knowing it. Few Americans fully appreciate the fact today. How many people know that in recent years we have had 250,000 troops in 700 bases around the world? Consider our recent history of military operations in the Caribbean, East Asia, the Far East, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Balkans. In America Rising, David Felix attempts to explain how and why America became a superpower by examining the political and economic factors that have driven its ascendence and their relationship throughout history.Felix begins with the dawn of America, showing how America amassed wealth and political power from the start through wars, assertions of economic might, and the creation of a cultural and philosophical base. The nation began with a political order, derived from our British origins, which enabled our pragmatic culture to take advantage of the vast wealth of a near-virgin continent. Political and economic freedom were paired, authority yielding to both freedoms. Our farmers and businessmen were dreamers, manufacturing realities out of those dreams. Felix's account then makes a point of neoclassical economics as an anvil on which to hammer out a sharper sense of the content of our existence. This book, which demonstrates the author's zest for historical analysis and great story-telling ability, points to the central fact of a rising America--the intensely energizing interaction between polity and economy. The United States is the greatest power in world history, but the rise of another great power, China, is beginning to be increasingly apparent. One trusts that, drawing upon its deep resources, America will remember its history and traditions and continue as a superpower.
