Excerpt from American Finance, Vol. 1: Domestic This book is written specially for American readers, the most appreciative and sympathetic that any financial writer could wish for. The American people are making financial history on the largest scale of any nation. It is natural, therefore, that finance should be to them a living, working interest. Their practical activity keeps their minds open and alert. They are wholly free from the Cobden fetish which has paralysed economic science in England. They have courage enough to hear both sides of a question, and they take the trouble to judge for themselves. Neither are they afraid of honest independent judgment from others. Once on a time they were proverbially thin - skinned, but Jefferson Brick is as dead as Queen Anne. The Americans of to-day have become conscious of their national strength. The Fall and Rise of American Finance traces the collapse and reconstitution of American financial power from the disintegration of robber baron J. P. Morgan's vast empire to the rise of finance behemoth BlackRock. Contrary to what is taken for common sense by figures from Hillary Clinton to Bernie Sanders, Maher and Aquanno insist that financialization did not imply the hollowing out of the "real" economy or the retreat of the state. Rather, it served to intensify competitive discipline to maximize efficiency, profits, and the exploitation of labor-with the support of an increasingly authoritarian state.

Sharpe this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Business & Economics categories.

The first comprehensive financial history of the United States in more than thirty years. Accessible to undergraduate level readers, it focuses on the growth and expansion of banking, securities, and insurance from the colonial period right up to the incredible growth of the stock market during the 1990s and the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. The author traces the origins of American finance to the older societies of Europe and Northern Africa, and shows how English merchants transferred their financial systems to America. He explains how financial matters dominated the founding and development of the colonies, and how financial concerns incited the Revolution. And he shows how the Civil War began the transformation of America from a small economy largely dependent on foreign capital into a complex capitalist society. From the Civil War, the nation's financial history breaks down into periods of frenzied speculation, quiet growth, periodic panics, and furious periods of expansion, right up through the incredible growth of the stock market during the 1990s.

Excerpt from The American Encyclopaedia of Commerce, Manufactures, Commercial Law, and Finance, Vol. 1 He has also derived valuable assistance from some distinguished official gentlemen, and from many eminent merchants; and has endeavored, whenever it. was practicable, to base his conclusions upon official documents. In very many instances, however, he has been obliged to adopt less authentic data; and he does not suppose that, amidst conflicting and contradictory statements, he has had sagacity enough to uniformly select those most worthy of being relied upon, or that the inferences he has drawn are always such as the real circumstances of the case would warrant. At all events, he has done his best not to be too much wanting in these respects. It must be well understood that this work is framed with the view, not of instructing the business man in relation to his own immediate and daily pursuits only, but also of placing within his reach information which it is always important, and often necessary, that he should possess, which many engaged in active business might find it exceedingly difficult to procure elsewhere, and which, being presented under an alphabetical arrangement, may be advantageously consulted even by those who have access to more expensive books. In regard to the matter of the work, as distinct from its form, the editor's aim has been to give the greatest possible amount of facts in the smallest number of words. The plan excludes, in general, long essays and treatises; for even those subjects which require considerable space for their proper treatment have, in most cases, been subdivided and discussed under separate heads in a manner which, it is hoped, will be found better adapted for reference than if they had been wholly contained under one title. Thus, while shipping is the subject of one general article, separate heads are devoted to affreightment, master, seamen, tonnage, demurrage, bill of lading, blockade, embargo, salvage, stranding, barratry, and other matters relating to that department. It has, in short, been the leading object throughout, to adapt the work to the wants of mercantile men, - a class to whom ease and rapidity of consultation, if united with accuracy, are matters of pre-eminent importance. Commodities are described under their English names; those which they bear in the other principal languages of Europe being also given when thought useful. The account embraces generally, not only a description of the commodity and its uses, but a notice of its growth or manufacture; of the marks by which its quality and genuineness are ascertained; and, in the case of the most important articles, the progress and present state of the trade, and a description of the machinery used in the latest processes of manufacture. The fiscal laws principally affecting each commodity will be found either under its name, or under other heads to which reference is given, according to circumstances. The rate of customs duties is given at the end of each article. The commercial statistics of the different countries of the world form another leading feature. Excerpt from Financial Giants of America, Vol. 1 Convinced by years of thoughtful observation that the part played by these financial titans is far too little known, and with a definite purpose of bringing to the public a more intimate knowledge of these men, I determined to gather together the fragmentary data regarding them, and make available to those who might be interested in the subject a work which I hope may be of widespread interest. This collection of biographical sketches is without literary style or originality of phrase, but let it be understood that the author makes no pretensions to literary ability. Perhaps por tions of the collection represent an oft-told tale. Frankly, I have drawn from time to time upon others who have been pur suing a similar line of investigation. To these my apologies and thanks are offered, my position being merely that of a gatherer of widely scattered information.
