Excerpt from American Game Birds A book with this title might very properly commence with the most pop ular game birds and continue down the list to the least popular ones, but if we placed the Ruffed Grouse or the Bob-white in the van, some sportsman who believes there is no game but ducks would be sure to be offended. Since there is a natural order of birds that is adopted by scientists the world over, we have taken up our so - called game birds in this natural order, an arrange ment that brings the Mergansers or Fish Ducks to the fore, even though they are not desirable as an article of food. We have included all the ducks, even though many of them are not fit to eat, and also all the sandpipers, even though many of them are so tiny that none but the veriest novice would intentionally shoot them, for the reason that they are very commonly seen. Excerpt from Our Feathered Game: A Handbook of the North American Game Birds Ome years ago I was shooting ducks in North Dakota with some army Officers from Fort Totten. In looking over the bag one evening I found a number Of birds which were entirely new to me. Several Of them were not mentioned in any Of the books On field sports. It occurred to me then that a book describing every game bird would be a valu able addition to a Sportsman's library. The authors Of the earlier books had little or no experience west of the Alleghenies and many Of the birds now taken by sportsmen were unknown to them. When Audubon and Wilson wrote their ornithologies much of the Western country was inhabited by hostile Indians and was inaccessible. Audubon was aware of the existence Of the best American grouse, the sharp tail, but said that he was entirely unfamiliar with its habits. Forester had no acquaintance with the com mon prairie-grouse. All the birds are now known, and described, but the information is contained in many volumes, and is, for the most part, too technical to entertain Sportsmen. There is not today a complete manual of the feathered game Of North America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Book of Birds: Common Birds of Town and Country and American Game Birds Would that the same could be said of the sportsman who almost invariably is at heart a nature lover, though the primi tive instinct to kill is uppermost. Many sportsmen, however, who formerly fol lowed wild creatures only to kill, have abandoned the use of rifle and shotgun, and today are finding greater pleasure in studying and photographing their former quarry than they did in pursuing it with murderous intent. A real interest in wild life leads naturally to a love of Nature in all her varied manifestations, and this, in all lands and under all circumstances, remains a source of lasting pleasure. Excerpt from Distribution of American Gallinaceous Game Birds It is simpler to list those habitats in which no species of gallinaceous game bird is found regularly than to list those in which one or more species do occur. Some unoccupied habitats are extremely inhospitable from the standpoint of available water. Others are isolated pockets or islands of a type (like the alpine meadow of California and Oregon) that is occupied by a gallinaceous species in other regions. The following habitats are unoccupied by any species of gallinaceous game bird, at least in certain areas. Excerpt from Game Birds at Home To please such, a book should be made up of selected charms of the field. These are, first and foremost, the nature of the game, its action and behavior. The mere form or size is of no more consequence than the flavor. Why the action of certain birds will give man more delight than that of others is one of nature's secrets. We can only say it is charming; and describe it as we know it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
