When we think of breaking images, we assume that it happens somewhere else. We also tend to think of iconoclasts as barbaric. Iconoclasts are people like the Taliban, who blew up Buddhist statues in 2001. We tend, that is, to look with horror on iconoclasm. This book argues instead that iconoclasm is a central strand of Anglo-American modernity. Our horror at the destruction of art derives in part from the fact that we too did, and still do, that. This is most obviously true of England's iconoclastic century between 1538 and 1643. That century of legislated early modern image breaking, exceptional in Europe for its jurisdictional extension and duration, stands at the core of this book. That's when written texts, especially poems, rather than visual images became our living monuments. Surely, though, the story of image breaking stops in the eighteenth century, with its enlightened cultivation of the visual arts and the art market. Not so, argues Under the Hammer: once started, iconoclasm is difficult to stop. It ripples through cultures, into the psyche, and it ripples through history. Museums may have protected images from the iconoclast's hammer, but also subject images to metaphorical iconoclasm. Aesthetics may have drawn a protective circle around the image, but as it did so, it also neutralised the image. The ripple effect also continues across the Atlantic, into puritan culture, into twentieth-century American Abstract Expressionism, and into the puritan temple of modern art. That, in fact, is where this book starts, with mid-twentieth-century abstract painting: the image has survived, just, but it bears the scars of a 500 year history.

This work traces a path from the Puritan practice of iconoclasm through the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Sinclair Lewis, and Spike Lee. A briefer treatment of William Cowper Brann appears in the introduction because both his life and work fit into a pattern of iconoclasm theorized by Ann Kibbey. This pattern recurs in the works of the major authors included. Kibbey's theorizes that Puritan iconoclasm led to verbal and physical violence in North America. The perpetrators became icons in their own right. I argue that Hawthorne employs this pattern in his fiction. For example, he compares Hester Prynne to the Virgin Mary. Hester is on a scaffold, not a pedestal. The situation undermines the iconicity she acquires. Nevertheless, both icon and broken icon exist in the text, each affecting how we interpret the other. Though there is no physical violence against Hester, people desire it. Other Hawthornean characters do not fare so well. Icons are also evoked and then undermined in Lewis's works. His depictions of George Babbitt and Elmer Gantry are notable. He vividly describes his characters, giving them shape in his readers' minds before dissecting them. Lewis shows a keen awareness of the Puritan influence on American culture. Spike Lee continues this pattern in his films, though not in emulation of the other writers. Nevertheless, he presents us with icons, both religious and cultural, that he calls into question. Lee frequently calls the conception of God as white into question; in one case, a prison chaplain presents iconic art as evidence that God is white. Lee's Malcolm X (an icon in himself) questions the accuracy of the idea and of the painting, thus serving as a kind of iconoclast. Lee's films show a figurative iconoclasm because the narratives frequently escalate from conflicts over images into physical violence. I conclude some authors may inadvertently answer the call for a national literature issued by Emerson. No theory can completely encapsulate American literature, but iconoclastic methods constitute a significant trend in both American literature and character.
