"This book is a history of the major works on North American Indian religions from the seventeenth century to the present day. It provides the most extensive annotated bibliography of Indian religions ever published in a single work, ranging from the earliest missionary observers through the development of Boasian anthropology to the latest writings from the new ethnography and the history of religions. With its chronological approach, the book far more than a mere bibliography; it is an invaluable survey of the centuries-old interest in and study of spirituality, and offers much needed direction to beginning students and scholars alike. By pointing to the masterworks in the field, by indicating diverse approaches to the topic, by suggesting aspects of study hitherto neglected, and by demonstrating the value of native American religious scholarship to the study of world religions, The Study of North American Indian Religions can stimulate further study of Indian religions." -- Publisher's description

Manitou And God written by R. Murray Thomas and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-30 with Religion categories.

Manitou and God describes American Indian religions as they compare with principal features of Christian doctrine and practice. Thomas traces the development of sociopolitical and religious relations between American Indians and the European immigrants who, over the centuries, spread across the continent, captured Indian lands, and decimated Indian culture in general and religion in particular. He identifies the modern-day status of American Indians and their religions, including the progress Indians have made toward improving their political power, socioeconomic condition, and cultural/religious recovery and the difficulties they continue to face in their attempts to better their lot. Readers will gain a better sense of the give and take between these two cultures and the influence each has had on the other. In Algonquin Indian lore, Manitou is a supernatural power that permeates the world, a power that can assume the form of a deity referred to as The Great Manitou or The Great Spirit, creator of all things and giver of life. In that sense, Manitou can be considered the counterpart of the Christian God. From early times, the belief in Manitou extended from the Algonquins in Eastern Canada to other tribal nations—the Odawa, Ojibwa, Oglala, and even the Cheyenne in the Western plains. As European settlers made their way across the land, the confrontation between Christianity and Native American religions revealed itself in various ways. That confrontation continues to this day.

"American Indian communities regard their religious freedoms to be endangered. Despite the First Amendment and an act of Congress that purports to protect Indian religious rights, Native Americans find the practice of their religious traditions to be hindered, often by governmental interference. This book, a collective effort by scholars, lawyers, and American Indian spokespersons has three goals: to identify the specific areas in which Indian religious practices are undermined by federal, state, and local policies as well as by private enterprises; to help non-Indians understand the conceptual bases for American Indian religious beliefs and practices; to suggest practical ways in which to protect the free exercise of Indian religions in the face of other conflicting claims and values. Specifically, Indians find their religious practice endangered in the following ways: the degradation of geographical areas deemed sacred sites; the maltreatment of Indian burials, particularly bodily remains; the prohibition against capture, kill, and use of endangered or protected series; the regulations regarding the collection, transport, and use of peyote; the alienation and display of religious artifacts; the prevention of Indian rituals and behavior (the wearing of braided hair, participation in sweats or pipe ceremonies), particularly in authoritarian institutions. This book is both a manifesto decrying policies that endanger American Indian religious traditions and a manual showing ways in which these traditions might be protected and promoted"--Back cover.
