Excerpt from The American Library Institute: Papers and Proceedings, 1917 The topic of archive libraries was introduced in order to have the matter of library history represented. Effort was made to get a recognized specialist in cuneiform collections (and we have them among American librarians) to undertake it, but as no one of them could prepare a paper at this time, it seemed worth while to take it up from the standpoint of the general student of library history and especially in order to call attention to two things: First that there is a work {to be done in the collecting of source materials on library history and making them available, a work which can he done by one who is not trained to the finest point as an expert specialist, and second, the fact that if we keep the scientific aim high we need not be afraid of the attempt or essay at a task, in which we cannot expect to reach final results. We aim in this Association at nothing less than the encouragement of systematic research in the book sciences on the highest and most exacting critical standards and in the most advanced methods. We are committed also, however, as practical librarians to the principle that something finished is better than a lot undone, and if the work that shall be done by the Insti tute is not always perfect, this is only what is true of all scientific associa tions, even 'in the field of natural science and what is still more true in the historical and linguistic associations. The paper itself is merely an introduction to some printed collections of material on the subject which will be given in the appendix to the Proceed ings. During the last three decades, the discoveries in early library history have been sensational and the results from the literature found, although these are only very partially exploited as yet, have been revolutionary as to ancient history. Excerpt from The American Library Institute: Papers and Proceedings, 1918 In view of the entrance of America into the war, the interest of this meet ing is naturally focused on the patriotic service which such as Association as this, and the libraries which it represents, can render in the national emergency. The afternoon session is given up wholly to this matter, and the main part of the usual President's address, which will be devoted to the war service of libraries of learning, with some special emphasis on the matter of censorship, will therefore be reserved for this afternoon. The war does not, however, put an end to our usual activities, and the morning session is dedicated to some of those topics which we have to con sider whether in peace or in war. The bulk of the program will be given to what may be counted the livest practical topic within the field of the A. L. I. At the present moment; that is, the higher education of librarians but we are fortunate in having one of Dr. Koopman's characteristic contributions to suggest the other extreme of our field from either that of the practical operation of libraries as represented in this morning's session or the prae tical service of those libraries in world work as represented in the afternoon. It is our symbol today for the manuscript field, and, like several of the topics for this afternoon, a symbol of research, a term which has come to express perhaps the most distinctive aspect of the work of this Institute and of the Bibliographical Society, as differentiated from the work of the American Library Association, whose distinctive work is in promoting education and the dissemination of knowledge. Further suggestive research matters are also touched in the pages on Small libraries and Index aids to research, also in three lists of historical periodicals and in a substantial addition to the collections of materials for library history in the matters of the libraries at boghaz-keui and at Pergamon. Excerpt from An Union List of Collections on European History in American Libraries: Compiled for the Committee on Bibliography of the American Historical Association Besides corrections, this edition contains eighteen additional titles of the more important sets overlooked in previous printings and nearly two thousand additions to the located copies. On the other hand, however, about a score of duplicate or faulty titles have been withdrawn. The thanks of the Committee and of all historical students are due to the libraries which have so cordially co-operated. The considerable amount of work implied on the part of each co-operating library naturally made some hesitate at first and until the meaning and usefulness to both libraries and historical students was fully explained and understood, but the universally cordial and even enthusiastic response, after the matter was understood, has been most gratifying. The check list was sent out last year (1911) and the results compiled and presented as a report at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association at Buffalo in December of that year. Some of the figures and inferences of this report will be found following this preface. The Check List, uncorrected as to bars, but with indication of location of copies added, as in the present edition, was issued in March as a proof edition.
