Excerpt from American Literature in the Colonial and National Periods The division of the subject made in the title seems warranted by the difference between ideas which pre vailed in the first century and three-quarters and those in the remainder of the three centuries, almost, during which english-speaking people have lived and written in this country. In the first period the manner of life and thought was that of British colonists; in the last, that of American citizens. The transition was not immediate in letters, as it was not in politics, but the quarter century during which independence was first devised and declared, and then won and acknowledged, contained a point where the dividing line may be drawn between two diverse literary periods. For convenience, 1783, the date of the Paris treaty, may serve as well as any. Further division has not been deemed essential to the present purpose. This purpose is to indicate, by mention of leading authors and their works, the growth of letters in Amer ica, from such efforts as the earliest English immigrants were able to make, with the attainments they brought from home, down to achievements by citizens of a nation old enough to have a literature of its own, however much it may be indebted to treasures in other lands. Excerpt from History of American Literature Historical Background. The colonial period of our literature extends from the first permanent settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607, to the calling of the Stamp Act Congress in 176 5. It is the period of beginnings, the seedtime, as it were, for the later growth into flower and fruitage during the period of our independent national life. The first business of the colonists was to establish themselves, on the new continent - to clear the forests and build homes, open up farms and pasture lands, construct roads and estab lish means of transportation and communication, overcome the hostile Indian tribes, and organize all the forces for a new religious, social, and economic life. This constructive and formative work naturally consumed the interests and energies of the colonists so largely that little time was left for the development of literature. Moreover, there was no unity of government or of purpose in the earlier part of the colonial period. Different European nations had established colonies on the new continent, and a struggle for supremacy inevitably followed. The history of the colonial period gives us the details of this struggle for supremacy, a struggle which, after narrowing down to a fierce conflict between France and England was'finally settled in England's favor by the Treaty of Paris in 176 3. Tendencies toward union. Naturally during the latter part of this struggle the English colonies were drawn into a. Excerpt from American Literature IN this outline of our literary progress it is especially designed to show how essentially Amer ican literature has been an outgrowth of American life. A people originally of English stock and increasingly open to European influences, we have nevertheless a national character, modified by local conditions, and a national point of View. Hence our literature, while in one aspect a branch of the noble parent literature of England, is rightly viewed, also, as the individual expression of an independent nation. Its significance to us, whose history it embodies and interprets, naturally out ranks its absolute value among the older literatures of the world. It is obvious that the limits of this survey forbid the mention of every distinguished name. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Interest of America in International Conditions A due recognition of this general truth, which intrusts the immediate locality with the functions of local administration, lies at the foundation of successful working institutions. But at a very early period of our national history, before independence was achieved, in measure even before it had been declared, that is, during the colonial period, it was seen that much more than local self-government was needed, if the. Excerpt from A Short History of the United States IN this book I have sought to tell clearly and impartially the story of human achievement in what is now the United States, from the earliest traces of man's existence to the present time. Out of the multitude of facts which may be considered within the domain of American history, those have been recounted which seem best suited to explain the progress of the people as a nation. The influence of physical environment has been discussed in the opening chapter, which also deals with the primitive inhabitants. An attempt has been made to give the colonial period its proper unity and show in what manner the colonies were a part of the general British scheme of im perial government. At the same time one must remember that it is American and not British history which concerns us, and for that reasor. The narrative must not neglect the individual colonies. From the end of the colonial period the dominant interest is the progress of events which'have to do with the common cause of independence, and after that with national development. Much thought has been given to the proper distribution of em phasis between the various historical factors. Political institutions are the most conscious expression of the national will. They determine the form of the story which the historian has to tell. But social and economic conditions and the actions of leading men give color and contour to the figure and decide whether it be attractive or unattractive, vivid or unimpressive. This volume contains at inter vals summaries of the habits and social progress of the people, while throughout it seeks to present the decisions of congress and adminis trations in the matters which relate to the most important phases of popular welfare. It is believed that, if well done, it thus becomes in the most vital sense a social history. My aim has been to lay the necessary foundation for those who wish to pursue further the subject of American history in whatever phase they may be interested.
