The Metropolitan Museum of Art possesses a remarkable collection of about 175 pastels by important American artists such as Mary Cassatt, James McNeill Whistler, Arthur G. Dove, and Georgia O'Keeffe. Because of their extreme fragility, these works are rarely exhibited and are never loaned to other institutions. The collection ranges from charming eighteenth-century pastel portraits to abstract works by twentieth-century modernists. American Pastels, prepared under the supervision of Doreen Bolger, Curator in the Department of American Paintings and Sculpture, includes extensive entries for thirty-five pastels, all reproduced in full color. The catalogue opens with two in-depth essays: "Revival & Revitalization" by Doreen Bolger and six graduate students from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, provides an art-historical overview of pastel painting in America from 1880 to 1930; "Materials & Techniques" by Marjorie Shelley, a Museum conservator, covers the technical aspects of the delicate medium. A check list of the American pastels in the Museum's collection, illustrated with duotone reproductions of each work, concludes this volume, a valuable reference for all students of American art. "The Metropolitan Museum began acquiring American drawings and watercolors in 1880, just ten years after its founding. Since then it has amassed more than 1,500 works executed by American artists during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in watercolor, pastel, chalk, ink, graphite, gouache, and charcoal. This volume documents the draftsmanship of more than 150 known artists before 1835 and that of about 60 unidentified artists of the period. It includes drawings and watercolors by such American masters as John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, John Vanderlyn, Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand, George Inness, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Because the 504 works illustrate such a wide range of media, techniques, and styles, this publication is a veritable history of American drawing from the eighteenth through most of the nineteenth century."--Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

The present volume, Publications of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1964-2005, is a successor to a volume published by the Museum in 1965 entitled Publications of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1870-1964. These two bibliographic volumes endeavor to list all the known books, pamphlets, and serial publications bearing the Museum's imprint, and issued by the institution during the first 135 years of its existence (through June 2005). The first volume was compiled by Albert TenEyck Gardner, at the time an Associate Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture, and the present volume has been compiled from the Annual Reports issued by the Museum during the relevant years. Together the two volumes testify to the tremendous contributions made to knowledge by the curators and conservators of the Metropolitan and by the many other experts who have contributed to the Museum's exhibition catalogues. Various issues of the Bulletin emphasize the great sweep of the Museum's acquisitions during these years, and the exhibition catalogues--a number of them Alfred H. Barr Jr., Award or the George Wittenborn Award--testify to the continuity of the institution's dedicated program to enrich people's lives through knowledge of art. The Complete Catalogue Of Known And Documented Work By William Merritt Chase 1849 1916 written by Ronald G. Pisano and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-01 with Art categories.

The first in a beautiful four-volume complete catalogue of all known works by the beloved American artist William Merritt Chase A perennial favorite of museum visitors, the works of William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) embody the quintessential characteristics of American Impressionism: outdoor landscapes, a colorful palette, and an energetic brushstroke. He was also a portrait painter of the first rank, a master of still life, a renowned teacher, and a leader of artists' societies. This gorgeous book, the first of a four-volume definitive catalogue, features Chase's stunning paintings in pastel, which constitute a major and previously understudied body of work by the artist; monotypes; painted tiles and plates; watercolors; and prints. Reconstructing Chase's oeuvre is a daunting task, as the artist left few records of any kind, and no documentation of his individual works exists. Furthermore, Chase's paintings and pastels have been forged in great numbers throughout the years, and many of these works still surface on the art market. Making this long-awaited volume even more valuable is a list of every known exhibition of Chase's work during the artist's lifetime, selected examples of major post-1917 exhibitions, and an essay on Chase's innovative pastel technique.
