Excerpt from American Schools In the pages that follow there has been no attempt at comprehensive accounts of the educational institutions named therein. Even had the requisite space for such treatment been available it would have been foreign to the purpose of the book itself. That purpose, briefly stated, was to supply a readable, though necessarily superficial description of nine American preparatory schools, touching but lightly on their scholastic side, yet giving within certain prescribed limits such impressions as the average observer would obtain in the course of a visit to each, together with some little account of their history in each case. The most of readers will probably find themselves more or less familiar with the history and customs of at least one school among the nine, but few persons, it is probable, are equally well acquainted with them all. Excerpt from The American High School The problems of the American high school are specific. They differ much from those of the elementary school below and those of the college, university, or technical school above. The experience of the last half century has revealed them; it has also developed a considerable body of knowledge concerning them, which every high school teacher should possess before entering upon his work. This knowledge will not solve all his individual problems, but it should at least make him aware of their existence and suggest the solution which he must himself work out. Excerpt from The Making of an American School-Teacher A few words only are needed to introduce this little book. If it has any quality of helpfulness, it will Speak for itself better than any preface could do. It was first published serially in the Saturday Evening Post and merits, it is believed, a more permanent form, especially as it touches upon problems of Public School Administration that are of universal concern. Excerpt from English History in American School Text-Books One of my earliest recollections is that of being taken to see the fireworks which were set off at the pierhead in Ramsgate harbor to celebrate the declaration of peace after the Crimean War. From that time until I went, when quite a young man, into the Gallery of Battles in Versailles - a gallery in which the glories of the French armies are celebrated in acres of canvas by the famous French artist Detaille - I never fully realized that Englishmen had ever been defeated by land or sea. I had been brought up in the belief that one Englishman could beat three Johnny Crapauds. But here all my illusions on that score were shattered at one rude blow, for about one picture in. Every three represented a defeat of the English in either a naval or a military engagement. Then I made up my mind with Sir Robert Walpole, that I would study anything but history, for history must be false. Some such awakening has no doubt come to almost every thinking man or woman who has been brought up on the old methods of teaching the history of their country, whether they be English or American, French or German, Turk or Russian - this no doubt has its effect in inspiring a patriotic feeling; in keeping alive a belief in the invincibleness of one's own nation; a faith in its good star, which has led men on to further victories and inspired them to yet more valorous deeds than their forefathers have performed. Excerpt from The American Secondary School and Some of Its Problems There are educational questions involving so large an area of interest that they defy treatment at the hand of an individual; a mere enumeration of the problems that attach themselves to our secondary schools would suffice to indicate the unwisdom of such an attempt. On individual questions and groups of questions, thoughtful men and women have concentrated their efforts; to combine their contributions to the various phases of the subject under wise editorial control into a consistent whole, to create a thesaurus of sound opinion on what the secondary school has been, is, and should be, seems the only way of reaching an agreement on the rational conduct of our middle schools. The cooperative idea seems peculiarly appropriate to this need of our educational scheme. As for the present treatise, its title speaks for itself. It has been realized by the author that it is wiser to concentrate attention upon some of the problems of the secondary school and indicate their significance rather fully, than to compass all, or even a majority, of the questions that attach themselves to our system of middle schools.
