Sandra S. Navarro's 1969-1970 student-abroad experience took place when there were no computers, mobile phones, or other of the many devices and conveniences indispensable to students today. Twenty-four years after the Second World War, the European Union did not exist, though the Eastern Bloc did. Sandra tells of waltzing in a Viennese palace, traveling behind the Iron Curtain and sharing a 40-hour train ride to Athens with hundreds of migrant workers. From obtaining her first passport to hitchhiking 4,500 miles after the school year, her transformation lies at the heart of this deeply personal story.

This 40th Anniversary Retrospective presents the reminiscences of the directors of Indiana Universitys Office of Overseas Study, from its creation in 1972 until the present day. They recount not only how IU faculty and administrators selected partners and locations around the world but also how they established systems at the university to facilitate student access and participation. Integrating such programs into a large public institution of eight campuses posed challenges as well as opportunities. While study abroad today is considered a high impact educational activity that students expect from a college experience, the eight authors show how unique such opportunities were just a few decades ago. Faculty and administrators who are tasked today with designing education abroad programs for students will appreciate and learn from this comprehensive overview of administrative and academic know-how. And those who had similar experiences during the past few decades will commiserate with the trials and tribulations inherent to internationalizing an institution of higher education.

Student Learning Abroad written by Michael Vande Berg and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-03 with Education categories.

A central purpose of this book is to question the claims commonly made about the educational benefits of study abroad. Traditional metrics of enrollment increases and student self-report, and practices of structural immersion, are being questioned as educators voice growing uncertainty about what students are or are not in fact learning abroad. This book looks into whether these criticisms are justified—and what can be done if they are.The contributors to this book offer a counter-narrative to common views that learning takes place simply through students studying elsewhere, or through their enrolling in programs that take steps structurally to “immerse” them in the experience abroad.Student Learning Abroad reviews the dominant paradigms of study abroad; marshals rigorous research findings, with emphasis on recent studies that offer convincing evidence about what undergraduates are or are not learning; brings to bear the latest knowledge about human learning and development that raises questions about the very foundations of current theory and practice; and presents six examples of study abroad courses or programs whose interventions apply this knowledge. This book provokes readers to reconsider long-held assumptions, beliefs and practices about teaching and learning in study abroad and to reexamine the design and delivery of their programs. In doing so, it provides a new foundation for responding to the question that may faculty and staff are now asking: What do I need to know, and what do I need to be able to do, to help my students learn and develop more effectively abroad? Millions of students seek short- and long-term study abroad options every year, and this trend is a key illustration of the internationalization of higher education. Because a global perspective has become mandatory in the largely globalized workforce, many institutions look to study abroad programs to prepare their students. This outbound mobility has the potential to contribute to greater understanding between cultures, countries, and individuals. The Handbook of Research on Study Abroad Programs and Outbound Mobility offers a comprehensive look into motivations for and opportunities through all forms of outbound mobility programs. By providing empirically-based research, this publication establishes the benefits, difficulties, and rewards of building a framework to support international students and programs. It is an invaluable resource for academics, students, policy makers, course developers, counselors, and cross-cultural student advisors.
