Publicate pentru prima dată integral, în forma în care apar în manuscrisul original, amintirile colonelului Grigore Lăcusteanu constituie o mărturie prețioasă cu privire la oamenii, obiceiurile și evenimentele din Țara Românească, din primele decenii ale secolului al XIX-lea până în 1874. „Între textele memorialistice lăsate posterității de epoca revoluției de la 1848, pe care se bazează în mare parte reconstituirile ulterioare ale evenimentelor și mai ales ale atmosferei care le-a produs sau favorizat, amintirile colonelului Lăcusteanu ocupă o poziție specială. Memoriile sau scrierile politice ale celor care au participat la revoluția din Țara Românească au apărut foarte curând, înainte de unirea Principatelor. Memoriile și publicațiile adversarilor, ale antirevoluționarilor și ale celor care s-au bucurat de restaurarea – pentru puțin timp – a domniilor impuse din afară au fost mult mai puține și aproape că n-au contat. Așa se face că apariția în 1934 a «amintirilor» colonelului Lăcusteanu a produs o veritabilă surpriză, pentru că acestea au prezentat depoziția părții absente în proces, depoziție care s-a dovedit un text extrem de interesant sub raport psihologic, cu incursiuni într-o zonă a vieții familiale mai degrabă rare pentru acel timp.” (Mircea Anghelescu)
