Processing is by freeze-drying or by air-drying process with sterilisation using gamma irradiation.The product has low antigenicity, has anti-microbial properties with ability to enhance epithelisation with marked relief of pain. It is useful as a dressing for wounds — flap wounds, burn wounds, injury wounds, diabetic ulcers, leprous ulcers and post-surgery wounds and post-radiation wounds. It is also used as a biological scaffold for cells in tissue engineering. Its ophthalmic applications include treatment of corneal ulcers and conjunctival tumours. Oral uses include gingiva depigmentation and periodontal regeneration.

This literature review will review current studies and research on Amniotic membranes (AM) in the field of optometry. AM are taken from the inner layer of the human placenta. AM have epithelial healing properties as well as anti-inflammatory properties that make them useful in treating ocular surface disorders. Some disorders that AM can help treating include, persistent epithelial defects, pterygium, limbal stem cell deficiency, bacterial keratitis, vernal conjunctivitis, and ulcerative keratitis. This review aims to compare current treatment options against amniotic membranes. We will also discuss desadvantages although very few exist and cost. Future studies should include research for the use of AM in the treatment of keratoconus. In conclusion, amniotic membranes should be thought of the ideal bandage for ocular surface disorders.
