Amor a palos describe las formas que tomó la violencia en la pareja a comienzos del siglo XX y cómo esta fue caracterizada y asumida por la sociedad chilena de entonces. Para ello, la autora echa mano a una variedad de fuentes documentales –libros, crónicas periodísticas, expedientes judiciales y literatura de la época– y logra recrear un panorama que nos permite comprender que este fenómeno dista mucho de ser algo reciente. El problema de la violencia de pareja, si bien es transversal a las clases sociales, no fue (ni es) percibido del mismo modo por la opinión pública. Mientras para las clases bajas, que vivían en conventillos hacinados y con problemas de alcoholismo, el maltrato era principalmente físico, los sectores más acomodados, en cambio, buscaban esconderla con consecuencias muchas veces dramáticas para las mujeres. Quizás por lo mismo este período verá surgir también los primeros movimientos feministas y de obreros que abogaban por la emancipación de la mujer. Amor a palos pretende aportar al estudio y discusión de un fenómeno que se ha instalado recientemente como un problema social al que hay que prestar atención. A la hora de llevar este estudio al presente, podemos ver cuánto se ha avanzado en la legislación y penalización (judicial y social) de este fenómeno, y cuánto nos queda por mejorar en la protección de las víctimas.
