Welcome to Amphibians of the World: The Nature Lover's Life List. It is the first and most beautiful (unillustrated) listing in print of all 7539 kinds of these creatures. Perhaps the most striking feature of Amphibians of the World will be its NEW LEXICON OF PROPOSED ENGLISH NAMES. For the first time in any major worldwide group, a comprehensive and systematic approach to common naming has been applied. The reader is encouraged to give feedback for future editions. Amphibians of the World is the only book to the all the Earth's amphibians which marries the useful combination of ENGLISH COMMON NAMES (for subspecies, too), SCIENTIFIC NAMES and their AUTHORSHIP/DATE, RANGE DESCRIPTIONS (where they live) and other features for those creatures that have them, such as I. U. C. N. conservation codes, introduced ranges, medical notes, etc. Also provided are sections on How to Use this Book, amphibian relationships, timeclips, sources, and no less than three Indexes and/or Cross-references. The student of these animals will be well served. It is shocking that this most basic combination of amphibian data has taken so long to appear in print. Birds and mammals have been graced with their own full-data checklists for years. Short essays on the logic underlying the author's take on the art of English common naming for these animals, the hobby of Herptiling, conservation and field ethics and what scientific classification may be saying about humankind's place in nature round out this presentation. As this is the hobby-oriented, Nature Lover's, version of this book (not just a 'scientific checklist'), it has a 'box' (actually a lozenge) to MARK YOUR SIGHTINGS, places to write in WHEN and WHERE YOU SAW AN ANIMAL, all in in a user-friendly format. The Date-Seen entry can be applied in either of two places in the life list to make room for longer locality data, where needed. Though the approach taken gives the specialist all her or his core 'bells and whistles', the focus of this effort is the general public. Think of this work as a sort of 'People's Listing' of these fellow travelers on our planet. Nature Paperback 8 1/2 x 11" (white Paper) 573 pages (plus cover)

Naturalists in every age have been intrigued by frogs, toads, and salamanders. They have seen these amphibians in a variety of guises -- as beings with magical powers or implicit moral lessons, as the products of spontaneous generation, as heralds of the seasons, as evidence of evolution or material for biological experiments, or, most recently, as ecological barometers for the biosphere.Nature's Fading Chorus presents an anthology of writings on amphibians drawn from the entire Western natural history tradition, beginning with Aristotle's Inquiry Concerning Animals written in the fourth century B.C.E., and continuing through recent scientific accounts of the relatively sudden -- and alarming -- global declines and deformities in amphibian species. The offerings not only reveal much about amphibian life, but also provide fascinating insight into the worldviews of the many writers, scientists, and naturalists who have delved into the subject. The book is divided into five sections. The first three offer selections from the most influential contributors to the Western canon of natural history writing, and contain classic texts that illustrate central themes in the changing understanding of amphibians and of the natural world. The fourth section offers engaging essays by leading twentieth-century nature writers that portray a variety of amphibians in diverse terrains. Part five covers the various aspects of, and research on, the problem of amphibian declines and deformities. Featured are more than thirty-five pieces, including works from Pliny the Elder, Gilbert White, William Bartram, Henry David Thoreau, Charles Darwin, T. H. Huxley, Loren Eiseley, Stephen Jay Gould, George Orwell, Annie Dillard, Terry Tempest Williams, and many others.Arranged chronologically, the writings provide an intriguing look at the ways in which humankind's understanding of its place in nature has changed through the course of Western history, and of the niche amphibians have occupied in that evolution.

In Search Of Lost Frogs written by Robin Moore and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-11 with Nature categories.

The story of an expedition in search of the world's rarest and most exotic amphibians. On August 9, 2010, 33 teams from 21 countries were dispatched to search for the Lost Frogs identified by Conservation International. On their list were a host of species including, in the top ten most wanted, the Rio Pescado Stubfoot Toad, found only in Ecuador - which was to prove a triumphant rediscovery. Several months, a number of key rediscoveries - such as the Elegant Tropical Frog, last seen in 1937 and the Chalazodes Bubble-nest Frog - last seen in 1874 and two new species later, the Search for Lost Frogs had generated more than 650 news articles in 20 countries and over a billion potential viewers. Author Robin Moore was responsible for spearheading the Search for Lost Frogs and coordinating the teams. He also co-led two expeditions to Colombia and Haiti. In Colombia in search of the Mesopotamia Beaked Toad, the steamy jungles of the Choco yielded not the desired species but a brand new one - the Mr. Burns Toad, so-called because of an uncanny resemblance to the Simpsons' character; the species was selected as one of Time magazine's top ten new species of 2010. In Haiti the team found six frogs last seen 20 years before, including the Ventriloqual Frog, named for its ability to throw its voice. This fascinating new book tells the story of the expedition - its highs and lows, discoveries and failures and the campaign's ongoing work. Despite the campaign, one third of the world's amphibians remain threatened with extinction. Most of the species searched for were not found. But those that were provide a glimmer of hope. Understanding why these species have survived when many others have not should help us understand what makes these species different. In Search of Lost Frogs is a story of perseverance, disappointment, rediscovery, resilience, but ultimately of hope, written with passion and illustrated with the author's superb photographs.
