The authors of this volume study and describe the valve morphology of 108 taxa, representing 75 distinct species, in the genera Amphora and Halamphora from aquatic environments in the United States and Japan. Amphora Ehrenberg ex Kützing and Halamphora (Cleve) Levkov are taxonomically diverse genera of raphid diatoms. In addition to being species rich, their ecology is equally diverse, with representatives of the genera present in coastal and inland waters from the tropics to the arctic. Of the 75 species, nearly one-half of them (33) are described as new, including 4 from the genus Amphora and 29 from the genus Halamphora. Eight species are transferred from Amphora to Halamphora and new combinations proposed. All taxa considered herein have been cultured, and 4 genes (the nuclear encoded 18S and 28S rDNA and the chloroplast encoded rbcL and psbC genes) have been sequenced for each. This combination of morphological and molecular data lays an important foundation for future research of the taxonomy, ecology and systematics of the Amphora and Halamphora floras of coastal and inland waters.

Diatom biology, genomics and ecology are becoming more relevant to the human species. While there have been recent compilations of some of the applied aspects of diatoms, and the dizzying pace of taxonomic revisions, this new volume bring us up to date on their classification, biology and ecology, as well as covering the topics of genomics and applied uses. In this collection, some of the leaders in diatom research present either new information or summarize recent research efforts on a wide range of topics, including the tree of life of diatoms, their classifications, the wide habitats and ecological spectra the group exploits, as well as the beauty of their form. This volume celebrates the diversity, emerging areas of research and fascinating ecology of the diatoms bringing this group of world-renown and emerging research leaders together. 'The Diatom World' will foster greater appreciation and research contributions on this incredibly diverse and fascinating group of organisms.

Taxonomic Studies Of The Subgenus Amphora Cleve Of The Genus Amphora Bacillariophyceae In Japan written by Tamotsu Nagumo and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Diatoms categories.

The genus Amphora is one of the larger genera belonging to the family Naviculaceae and includes about 350 taxa. It is a widespread genus with a few species occurring in freshwater and brackish water, and many species in marine habitats. Members of the genus are clearly distinguished from related genera. The characteristic, strongly dorsiventral frustule has raphe systems which lie close to the ventral margins of the valve. There is no taxonomic revision and clear definition of the genus Amphora based modern taxonomic criteria covering both freshwater to marine species. This study deal with the taxonomy the subgenus Amphora, for freshwater and marine species in Japan. In addition to the characters observable by light microscopy, characters revealed mainly by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, such as raphe system and the shape of dorsal marginal costa, were employed to establish the taxonomy of the taxa considerd herein. Eighteen taxa are recognized in this work. First, each taxon was observed in detail using SEM to expand current knowledge of its fine structure. Taxonomic identification was then confirmed with reference to type material or other historic collections. Among the taxa investigated here, four are new to science, one is a new combination and one is a new name. Ten of the taxa investigated here (Amphora barrowiana (Patr. et Freese) Nagumo comb. nov., A. copulata (Kützing) Schoeman et Archibald, A. hiromuii Nagumo sp. nov., A. inariensis Krammer, A. liriope Nagumo sp. nov., A. macedoniensis Nagumo sp. nov., A. ovalis Kützing., A. pediculus (Kützing) Grun., A. rotunda Skv., A. sibirica Skv. et Meyer) are from freshwaters habitats. Three (A. arenicola (Grun.) Cleve, A. javanica Schmidt, A. libyca Ehr.) are from brackish-water habitats and five (A. gigantea Grun., A. immarginata Nagumo sp. nov., A. marina W. Smith, A. plativalvata Nagumo nom. et stat. nov., A. schmidtii Grun.) are from marine habitats.

Identification Of Freshwater Diatoms From Live Material written by E.J. Cox and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-08-31 with Nature categories.

This book is the first to provide an identification key to this important freshwater group of algae which enables the user to work from live specimens. The use of fresh material means that time-consuming preparation techniques can be avoided enabling analyses to be made within a short time of collection. Also the diatoms can be counted, identified and studied at the same time as other algae in the sample. The book provides a general introduction to the diatoms including a resume of the variety of chloroplast forms encountered, a review of colony types, a guide to shape terminology and also information on how to measure cells. The keys are designed for the specialist and the non-specialist alike, allowing two points of entry and the identification of most common taxa to species level. When cleaned material is necessary for unequivocal identification, this is indicated. The book also contains a list of all species included with brief ecological notes on occurrences and distribution along with a glossary of terms. This book will be of immense use to biologists studying algal communities in freshwater ecosystems and particularly to those involved in monitoring programmes. The increasing realization of the importance of algae to the health of aquatic ecosystems, and the developing use of diatoms as environmental indicators means that this volume will become an invaluable aid to the water industries and environmental protection agencies.

Freshwater Algae of North America: Ecology and Classification, Second Edition is an authoritative and practical treatise on the classification, biodiversity, and ecology of all known genera of freshwater algae from North America. The book provides essential taxonomic and ecological information about one of the most diverse and ubiquitous groups of organisms on earth. This single volume brings together experts on all the groups of algae that occur in fresh waters (also soils, snow, and extreme inland environments). In the decade since the first edition, there has been an explosion of new information on the classification, ecology, and biogeography of many groups of algae, with the use of molecular techniques and renewed interest in biological diversity. Accordingly, this new edition covers updated classification information of most algal groups and the reassignment of many genera and species, as well as new research on harmful algal blooms. Extensive and complete Describes every genus of freshwater algae known from North America, with an analytical dichotomous key, descriptions of diagnostic features, and at least one image of every genus. Full-color images throughout provide superb visual examples of freshwater algae Updated Environmental Issues and Classifications, including new information on harmful algal blooms (HAB) Fully revised introductory chapters, including new topics on biodiversity, and taste and odor problems Updated to reflect the rapid advances in algal classification and taxonomy due to the widespread use of DNA technologies
