Before his rather sudden passing in 2020, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks was one of the most eloquent and influential religious leaders of the generation. As Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth for over two decades, he offered a universal message cultivated from the Jewish and Western cannons he knew so well. One concept that figured prominently in his work was joy. “I think of Judaism as an ode to joy,” he once wrote. “Like Beethoven, Jews have known suffering, isolation, hardship, and rejection, yet they never lacked the religious courage to rejoice.” In this volume, organized by the Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks-Herenstein Center for Values and Leadership, academics and writers explore the significance of joy within the Jewish tradition. These essays and reflections discuss traditional Jewish primary sources, including Biblical, Rabbinic and Hebrew literature, Jewish history and philosophy, education, the arts, and positive psychology, and of course, throughthe prism of Lord Sacks’ work.

The life and music of Beethoven still fascinate classical music lovers, new and old. His many symphonies, sonatas, concertos, string quartets, and his one opera enchant audiences, challenge performers, engage students, and support scholars in their work. In Experiencing Beethoven, music historian Geoffrey Block explores in layman’s terms a highly representative body of about two dozen Beethoven instrumental and vocal works, offering listeners who know him well, or are just discovering him, an opportunity to grasp the breadth and depth of his musical genius. Designed for those unversed in musical terminology or theory, Experiencing Beethoven places the composer’s works within the evolving context of his personal and professional life and social and cultural milieu. Block sheds light on the public and private audiences of Beethoven’s music, from the concerts for the composer’s own financial benefit to the debut of the “Eroica” Symphony at the palace of Prince Lobkowitz to the historic public premiere of his Ninth Symphony. Experiencing Beethoven paints a portrait of the composer’s youth in Bonn, his early triumphs and artistic maturation in Vienna, and—despite the challenges his music posed to his contemporaries— the recognition he received during his lifetime as the most acclaimed composer of the era. Block conveys the range and scope of Beethoven’s achievement, from his heroic style to his lyricism, grappling throughout with the composer’s power to communicate his idealistic musical vision to listeners in both his time and ours. Finally, Experiencing Beethoven explores why Beethoven’s music continues to enjoy an unwavering appeal in an age saturated with a range of musical styles.

The composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was not bereft of early advocates, from Schumann, Liszt, and Mahler to Sir George Grove. Brahms famously heralded Schubert as “the true successor to Beethoven.” Nevertheless, it was not until the end of the twentieth century that Schubert’s major instrumental works finally and fully emerged from Beethoven’s shadow. Critics and scholars began to reinterpret Schubert’s departures from Beethoven’s formal and stylistic characteristics, and to see these departures not as flaws but as strengths and hallmarks of a new paradigm. Schubert’s alternate constructions of “masculine subjectivities,” first described by Schumann in 1838, parallel a developing appreciation for lyricism, melody, and song-traits historically regarded as feminine. Consequently, Schubert’s approach is increasingly viewed as innovative and divergent rather than defective and deviant. Schubert’s Reputation from His Time to Ours tells the story of how and why this has happened.

In 2005 the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana celebrated its 125th year as part of the University Library of the University of Amsterdam. Several events were held to mark this anniversary, including lectures and an exhibition. In this volume the history of the library is examined further with new and incisive articles on the life and work of many of its leading figures and an analysis of part of Leeser Rosenthal's original collection. In addition, new material is presented regarding the fate of the library during the Second World War. A year earlier, in 2004, Adri Offenberg retired as curator of the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana. Alongside a review of his work at the library, this volume provides a complete bibliography of all his published work until 2006 and what has become known in English as a festschrift: a collection of studies in his honour by Dutch and international colleagues and fellow bibliophiles about items in the library collection, as well as topics relating to Jewish booklore unconnected with the library. This volume is a tribute to Adri Offenberg the curator, but above all to Adri Offenberg the groundbreaking researcher.

Fairacres Publications 164 The theme of joy is mentioned only infrequently in the media. The author explores the question of why joy, a gift of the Spirit, appears to be such a rare commodity in our society. He offers reflections on some of the key features of joy, and encourages us to rejoice, to ‘do joy’. This book has its origin in a sermon preached on 29 August 2010 in the context of a retreat given to the Community of the Sisters of the Love of God at Fairacres, Oxford.

Based on a national “joy study,” here is a workshop leader’s 28-day blueprint to greater happiness broken down into three remarkable steps. Is it possible to study what creates joy in our lives—and to break down the results into a believable, achievable program for inner fulfillment? Mechanical engineer, corporate manager, and motivational coach Jacqueline Kelm discovered that the answer is yes—and she shares her results in The Joy of Appreciative Living. One day while preparing for a speech before a local spiritual community, Kelm experienced a breakthrough. She found a simple way of integrating all the principles of positive-thinking philosophies into three basic exercises. These three steps to lasting, meaningful joy require less than five minutes a day, plus fifteen minutes on the weekends. Her workshop audiences were astounded. Realizing that she was onto something, Kelm designed a study to see how these exercises would work for different kinds of people. Using a cross section of adults around the United States, Kelm’s “joy study” showed that after twenty-eight days, 97 percent of participants assessed themselves to be significantly happier. Even more remarkable, participants in the study continued to feel happier even six months afterward. Just three exercises in twenty-eight days? It sounds so simple because author Jacqueline Kelm makes it simple. The book will highlight exactly how and why these exercises work. The Joy of Appreciative Living transforms complexity, insight, and years of trial into one focused, high-powered program of daily practice that can make all the difference in your world.
