Gustav, a black man with a gift for discipline and music, grew up in Königsberg and became "the only black bandmaster of the German Army."This fact-filled story takes the reader back in time, over 150 years ago. There we meet the controversial Prussian Prince Albrecht, getting to know him via his travel adventures, as well as in war. Prince Albrecht brought many things from Arabia back to Prussia, one of which was a 'human gift' from the Egyptian Viceroy Muhammad Ali: a seven-year-old dark-skinned boy. He was given the name August Albrecht Sabac el Cher and accompanied the Prince from that point on.The social climate of the Prussian state of the 40s and 50s was one of curiosity towards "others," not hostility. August's dark skin greatly benefited him, in fact. His career at Court flourished.In 1867, he married a German woman, Anna Maria Jung, the daughter of a Berlin clothesmaker. While the happy couple lived relatively trouble free in Germany, their two children, Gustav and Elise, were dealt a different fate, as were their children who came of age in NAZI GERMANY.Utilizing photos, records, and eyewitness accounts, this wonderful little book paints a comprehensive picture of the whole family. One learns, for example, that Gustav's sons, Herbert and Horst, were deeply loved by all. Both mastered music early on and both pursued professional careers. While Herbert continued in this vein with measurable success, Horst was not so fortunate. A "black holocaust" that commenced under the German Kaiser, Jewish genocide, Aryan supermen bred to dominate the world under Nazism's mad tutelage, thousands of death camps, mad German doctors drunk on human experimentation, Slavs slaughtered mercilessly because they are "subhumans," and a World War that was started by the "most lethally racist regime" in modern history. Can one historian undermine so many indisputable facts about "Hitlerdeutschland"? You bet. EXCERPT: ...."Hitler in fact spoke about this issue - the threat of 'blond-haired, blue-eyed' pure race theories - to one of his early confidants (1929 - 1933), Otto Wagener. He announced a racial reorientation during his 1933 Nuremberg Party Day speech. Hitler declared: "We do not conclude from a man's physical type his ability, but rather from his achievements his race." Per Gregor, ..".achievements, not physical type, were to be the measure of worth." This new merit-based racial conception was "well under way" by 1935, yet few historians since that time have bothered to mention this, let alone examine it. And just what did this reorientation encompass? The new theory iterated that heroism, willpower, the readiness to sacrifice, and faith were more important in shaping Germany's destiny than physical traits such as tallness and blondness. Of course, it took time for this new conception to trickle down and disseminate amongst the various official and elite entities: Reichsfuhrer Himmler and the Allgemeine SS were initially among the least responsive to the reorientation. Himmler stubbornly resisted conceding to the Russian Slavs in any tangible way until it was too late to reverse Germany's military collapse. But Himmler did bow to Andrei Vlasov in the end: The most notable aspect of the Himmler-Vlasov conference is that the decisive change in Nazi policy arrived. It was Himmler who convinced Hitler to allow Vlasov and his Slavs to prove their quality. And Himmler admitted to Vlasov that grave errors had been made (regarding the Slavs), that attitudes were in fact changing, and that he had erred in publishing the anti-Slavic pamphlet Der Untermenschen. (In Himmler's defense, he claimed that all peoples had their "subhuman" elements and that he was only pointing out in this tract that Russia was ruled by the subhuman elements of her otherwise distinguished population. In any case, Himmler apologized to Vlasov.) Perhaps most astounding is what Richard Eichenauer, a teacher from Bochum and the author of Race as Law of Life in History and Ethos: A Guide for German Youth (1934), concluded. He went "so far as to inform his readers that the amount of Nordic blood an individual possesses means nothing (spielt keine Rolle) in the Nordic scheme of things because 'it has often enough been the case that men of extremely mixed race (stark gemischter Rasse) have conceived and more powerfully grasped these [Nordic] notions than the predominantly Nordic'." This is a firm rejection of Nordic determinism and could even be construed as an official endorsement of race-mixing. This is the first English translation of an important document in the history of the black presence in Germany and Europe: the autobiography of Theodor Michael. Theodor Michael is among the few surviving members of the first generation of 'Afro-Germans': Born in Germany in 1925 to a Cameroonian father and a German mother, he grew up in Berlin in the last days of the Weimar Republic. As a child and teenager he worked in circuses and films and experienced the tightening knot of racial discrimination under the Nazis in the years before the Second World War. He survived the war as a forced labourer, founding a family and making a career as a journalist and actor in post-war West Germany. Since the 1980s he has become an important spokesman for the black German consciousness movement, acting as a human link between the first black German community of the inter-war period, the pan-Africanism of the 1950s and 1960s, and new generations of Germans of African descent. Theodor Michael's life story is a classic account of coming to consciousness of a man who understands himself as both black and German; accordingly, it illuminates key aspects of modern German social history as well as of the post-war history of the African diaspora. The text has been translated by Eve Rosenhaft, Professor of German Historical Studies at the University of Liverpool and an internationally acknowledged expert in Black German studies.
