Much interest has been shown in Charles Ives since his death on May 19, 1954. Few composers in the history of music have offered the innumerable problems of analysis and performance that are seen in the works of Ives. Although the importance of this major American composer is now widely recognized, the frustrating complexity of his music has succeeded in discouraging large-scale studies of Ives's compositional characteristics on a musicological level. Ives's transcendental beliefs directly influenced his concepts of freedom in creative expression. For this reason, this book will focus on Ives's indebtedness to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau, Horatio Parker ad George Ives. This book begins with an investigation of the New England Transcendental tradition. The Transcendentalists were critical, restless, sensitive and highly sophisticated. They were Utopians 1 who seriously reacted to radical social changes, and advocated progressive opinions. Music was very important to them as an expression of their beliefs, and their musical philosophy greatly influenced the development of Ives's musical thought. The Transcendentalists regarded music as a unique form of communication, a universal truth, capable of penetrating all the barriers of time and space. Furthermore, they viewed music as a means of communicating with one's own thoughts. Ives's philosophical beliefs about musical composition will be discussed with reference to Ives's own writings on aesthetics and music, as well as selected works by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and others. In addition, Ives's aesthetic concepts are reflected in the structural organization of the above-mentioned piano compositions. It is not possible within the limited scope of this manuscript to present a detailed account of Ives's life. However, there are some biographical considerations and philosophical beliefs that are valuable to this study insofar as they affected Ives's thoughts about music and composition. In particular, the New England Transcendentalists exerted a direct influence upon his concepts of creative freedom and stylistic development. Most books and periodicals have considered the influences of the New England Transcendentalists upon Ives. However, the sum of his philosophical and musical thoughts exist in his own Memos, Essay Before a Sonata, and handwritten notes made in his manuscripts. An American Composer-Charles E. Ives: New England Transcendentalism 3 Gordon Cyr's article, "Intervallic Structural Elements in Ives's Fourth Symphony,"4 presents the Fourth Symphony from an intervallic relationship. The author examines Ives's use of borrowed tunes and the alteration of the basic cell by way of inversion, retrograde, and stretto. Clayton Henderson's dissertation, "Quotation as a Style Element in the Music of Charles Ives,"5 considers the structural role of borrowed elements as a more significant key for understanding Ives's music. Ives adopted much of his material with discernment, using it for its programmatic qualities and as a unifying element from which traditional forms, such as rondo, verse and refrain, ternary structure, and arch designs were evolved most frequently. At present, there are no reliable stylistic analyses and philosophical investigations of Invention, March in G and D "Here's to Good Old Yale," Three-Page Sonata, Song Without (Good) Words, The Anti-Abolitionist Riots, Some Southpaw Pitching, Varied Air and Variations, Waltz Rondo, Study No. 22, The Celestial Railroad. Essays Before a Sonata by Charles Ives - A Creative Genius. An American Modernist Composer. The Complete New Edition. Charles Ives (1874-1954) was probably one of the most psycho-intellectually brilliant, imaginative and flexible Americans to ever "walk the land of freedom." A graduate of Yale, he became a multi-millionaire in the American insurance industry, introducing brilliant innovations within that industry. He also, unlike a few composers, found the time and the money (being a shrewd and practical businessman) to get married and have children. His accomplishments for which he is best known, however, are those in the field of music. At the time of its composition, Ives' music was probably the most radically modern in history, and by itself had enough material to serve as the foundation of modern 20th century music. For example, at the turn of the century, this eccentric composer created band works featuring multiple melodies of multiple time signatures opposing and complimenting each other within the same piece. Ives was also a revolutionary atonal composer, who created, essentially without precedent, many atonal works that not only pre-date those of Schoenberg, but are just as sophisticated, and arguably even more so, than those of the 12-tone serialist. The following pages were written primarily as a preface or reason for the [writer's] second Pianoforte Sonata—"Concord, Mass., 1845,"—a group of four pieces, called a sonata for want of a more exact name, as the form, perhaps substance, does not justify it. The music and prefaces were intended to be printed together, but as it was found that this would make a cumbersome volume they are separate. The whole is an attempt to present [one person's] impression of the spirit of transcendentalism that is associated in the minds of many with Concord, Mass., of over a half century ago. This is undertaken in impressionistic pictures of Emerson and Thoreau, a sketch of the Alcotts, and a Scherzo supposed to reflect a lighter quality which is often found in the fantastic side of Hawthorne. The first and last movements do not aim to give any programs of the life or of any particular work of either Emerson or Thoreau but rather composite pictures or impressions. They are, however, so general in outline that, from some viewpoints, they may be as far from accepted impressions (from true conceptions, for that matter) as the valuation which they purport to be of the influence of the life, thought, and character of Emerson and Thoreau is inadequate. Among those atonal works was his second, "Concord" piano sonata, one of the finest, and some would say the finest, works of classical music by an American. It reflects the musical innovations of its creator, featuring revolutionary atmospheric effects, unprecedented atonal musical syntax, and surprising technical approaches to playing the piano, such as pressing down on over 10 notes simultaneously using a flat piece of wood. What a mischievious creative genius! And yet, despite the musically innovative nature of these works, from a thematic standpoint, they are strictly 19th century. Ives, like American band-composer Sousa, consciously infused patriotic or "blue-blood" themes into his pieces. In the "Concord," he attempted to project, within the music, the 19th century philosophical ideas of the American Transcendentalists, who obviously had a great impact on his world-view.

Often called 'the father of American music,' Charles Ives, who died in May 1954, left a heritage of music which will in all probability be as widely known and loved from now on as it was neglected in the past generation. The authors have written a warm, moving story of Ives's life and art. Born in Danbury, Connecticut, in 1874, Charles Ives was long regarded by many as a musical eccentric. Today, he is more and more thought of as a creator as truly and triumphantly American as were Mark Twain and Walt Whitman. As a youth, he was the restless pupil of his father (also a musician), and loved to try new things in musical idiom. Ives was a Connecticut Yankee to his roots, at home with the world of nature, militantly idealistic, relentless in his integrity, diligent in his appointed duties, and proud of resulting achievements. He was a better baseball player than organist when he entered Yale and, afterward, more successful as a businessman than as a composer. He believed that artists could bear their economic burden without endangering their art. Consequently, he applied himself to building one of the great insurance sales agencies of America. His composition was done in the hours he could spare from his vocation. As he prospered, much of his money went to print and publish his music, to hire performances so that he might hear what he wrote, and to make his music available. But, at first, performers and conductors scorned as unplayable music far beyond their talents and imaginations. The burden of vocation and the frustration of avocation brought on an early physical collapse, and Ives spent the last half of his life in retirement and partial invalidism. With financial means to devote himself wholly to composition, he now lacked the strength, and his will to continue composing was damaged by long artistic isolation. The music of Charles Ives is a cultural sourcebook of America at the turn of the century. Ives took the evangelical hymns, the melodies of the dance hall, the military band marches, the sounds of village life, college and fraternity songs, the music of the world of nature, and set them faithfully. He then shaped, interwove, and integrated them so that a fresh musical work might emerge - familiar in substance but of startling drive, perception, and vigor. 'The fierce complexity of reality' was Ives's conception of the nature of things and music.
