Poverty, an ubiquitous phenomenon have been explained by scholars and policy makers in varied ways, resulting in a multitude of approaches to understanding the phenomenon. Although many of these approaches are contradictory, they can be broadly categorized into those stressing structural explanations and those emphasizing individual agency and personal dysfunctions. Within the latter is the "Culture of Poverty Thesis" by Oscar Lewis, which located the persistence of poverty in the value systems of the poor. The study thus sought to test the theory in the context of Ghana focusing on an urban slum, Nima. 136 households were sampled, collecting data using both qualitative (observation) and quantitative (questionnaire) methods to adequately examine and gain insight into the pertinent issues relative to the persistence of poverty. Key tenets of the culture of poverty thesis were significantly discredited, rather depicting Nima as a slum of hope offering opportunities to its inhabitants to leap out of their deprived circumstances. This was shown in the strong agency of the respondents in spite of the challenges they face in their daily negotiation of life.

Oscar Lewis was a cultural anthropologist whose work documented the lives of the world's poor. He developed a hypothesis called the "culture of poverty" which held that the desperately poor in modern nations live within a distinct subculture that transcends national boundaries and separates the poor from the broader societies in which they live. Lewis also developed a novel ethnographic method that relied on a combination of tape-recorded interviews, material culture analysis and psychological examination. This dissertation traces the development of Lewis's theory and method through several of his works, focusing on La Vida, Lewis's final major work and most widely read book. La Vida examined an extended Puerto Rican family living in San Juan and New York City. The book was a landmark work in the War on Poverty debates, as well as the debate about the relationship of Puerto Rico to the United States. Lewis himself considered the book to be an anti-imperialist tract, though he did not make that clear publicly. The culture of poverty, in vogue in the late 1950s and most of the 1960s, was by 1968 under sustained attack. Scholars and the public retreated from it, and Lewis's star went into decline. Although the culture of poverty may be flawed, Lewis's work remains vital to understanding poverty in modern societies.

The purpose of this research is to explain how the "culture of poverty" theory is perpetuated in today's popular films. The "culture of poverty" theory, posited by Oscar Lewis (1961), suggests that the conditions of certain impoverished groups in the United States are better explained by certain shared values and traits instead of on structural barriers, such as lack of access to resources. This study used a qualitative content analysis of three films selected via criterion-based sampling that belong to the "urban high school film" genre [Gridiron Gang (2006), Coach Carter (2005), and Take the Lead (2006)]. Specifically, I analyzed these films for themes, based on the grounded theory method, using the AVO-perspective technique, which utilizes audiovisual data as the object of analysis (Figueroa 2008). Results demonstrated the following thematic categories: Lewis' first dimension of attitudes, values, and character structure of the individual (i.e. the inability to defer gratification, personal unworthiness/weak ego structure, and dependency), Lewis' second dimension of the nature of family (blame on the family's values instead of on the lack of resources), and the meritocracy ideology. These findings suggest that the negative film portrayals of poor, inner-city youth in meritocratic-based plots, are modem-day, middle-class perceptions rooted in the "culture of poverty."
