The purpose of this study is to determine the potential of radio as a provider of non-formal education to rural areas of developing countries. A preliminary analysis of the rural extension shortcomings in Third World countries is-presented as well as the potential advantages of incorporating radio in agricultural extension teaching. Some successful Latin American radio projects, their target, population, operational system, funding, impact, strengths and weaknesses are discussed. Based on this, a radio program is proposed for implementation at a national level by the Brazilian Enterprise of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (EMBRATER). The project purpose, components, and characteristics are specified.
