Excerpt from Bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries, 1907, Vol. 27 This group Of fishes was chosen for investigation, first, because of the relatively simple structure of their digestive tract, and second, because they may, from their position in the scale of evolution, form the groundwork for an extensive comparative study of fish in general. Thus we may arrive at a unified view of the changes, structural and physiological, which have taken place in the alimentary canal of fishes from the lowest to the highest. The treatment of the subject is partly histological, but mainly physiological. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Progress in Biological Inquiries, 1930 Progress in biological investigations during the year 1930 as con ducted by the bureau's division of inquiry respecting food fishes, has been most gratifying. According to our present views, the program of scientific research shows a better balance between the theoretical and the practical aspects of fishery science and aquatic biology and a more satisfactory distribution of projects among the various sections of the country and the fishery industries than ever before, There are still many gaps in the program. Many fisheries are threatened by depletion. Means of augmenting the fish supply in man locali ties must still be devised. Many of the very principles 0 fishery conservation still await discovery. However, through the adoption of a well-rounded research plan, made possible by the act of May 21, 1930, known as the 5-year construction and maintenance program for the United States Bureau of Fisheries, we are confident that results of practical benefit will accrue to the fishery industries, to the game-fish angler, and to the country at large that many times out weigh the expenditures involved. Although the functions of the Bureau of Fisheries have been vastly enlarged since its establishment in 1871 by the organization of first, the division of fish culture, then the division of fishery industries, and later, the Alaska division, the division of inquiry still discharges many of the original functions of the old Fish Commission, especially those of prosecuting the necessary inquiries, chiefly biological in character, regarding the occurrence and the extent of declines in the number of food fishes in the coastal and interior waters, of discovering what the causes of such declines may be, and of devising and recommending means of overcoming such declines either by regulatory legislation or by more positive and direct means of augmenting the resource. Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, Vol. 37: 1919-1920 The present study of the chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus Ischawylscha), of which this paper forms the first contribution, was started in the summer of 1914 at the instance of the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. The importance and necessity of such a study had been made apparent, especially by the work of Gilbert on the sockeye salmon, and it seemed advisable to extend in detail the outline of the life history of the chinook as given by Gilbert (1913). The method employed - that of analysis on the basis of scale studies - is now too well known and too widely used to need description. The paper just cited and subsequent studies of the sockeye by the same author contain a complete description of the methods emoloyed and form admirable examples of studies prosecuted on this basis. Our knowledge of the life histories of all the Pacific coast Salmonidae was distinctly unsatisfactory previous to the discovery of the value of scale studies. The descriptions given by Jordan and Evermann (1896-1900), Jordan (1905), Rutter (1903), Scofield (1898), and Chamberlain (1907), contain the most accurate information regarding the chinook which was available prior to Gilbert's first study. The general features of the early life in fresh water and of the seaward migration were well known, and Chamberlain had shown quite conclusively that the sockeye and chinook salmon mature commonly at about the fourth year, although this is subject to variation. The work of McMurrich (1912) on the chinook salmon, based on the scales, has been shown by Gilbert (1913) to be unreliable because of the small number of specimens examined and an incorrect interpretation of the central (nuclear) area of the scales. It remained, therefore, for Gilbert (1913) to give us the first accurate description of the general features of the life history of the chinook salmon in his paper, "The Age at Maturity of the Pacific Coast Salmon of the genus Oncorhynchus." In this he shows, among other things, that: (a) The chinook, or king, salmon spawn normally either in the fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh year, the females more frequently in the fourth year; (b) the "grilse" are exclusively males and are of two sizes, representing two and three year fish; (c) the young may migrate as fry soon after hatching, or may remain in the stream until their second spring, migrating as yearlings; and (d) among the fish of any given age, the larger specimens will be those which migrated seaward as fry, although these do not attain the average stature of those fish, one year older, which migrated as yearlings. Excerpt from Bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries, Vol. 26: 1906 In the summer of 1900, in connection with the investigations in Japan by Professors Jordan and Snyder, a very considerable collection of fishes was made at Manila and Cavite, on the island of Luzon, and about Iloilo, on the island of Panay, in the Philippine Islands, by Dr. George A. Lung, surgeon in the United States Navy. This collection is the property of Stanford University, but a series of specimens has been presented to the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries and to the U. S. National Museum. The specimens in question are in excellent condition, and the large number of species Obtained shows the faithful work of Dr. Lung as collector. Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States, Vol. 40: Bureau of Fisheries, 1924 In the summer of 1912 the Bureau of Fisheries, with the cooperation of the Museum of Comparative Zoology of Harvard University, undertook an oceano graphic and biological survey of the Gulf of Maine, with special reference to its fishes and floating plants and animals (plankton), its physical and chemical state, and the circulation of its waters. Subsequent cruises were made on the fisheries schooner Grampus during the summers and autumns of 1913, 1914, 1915, and 1916, and during the winters and springs of 1913 and 1915. The work was interrupted by the war, but was resumed with a cruise of the fisheries steamer Albatross in the late winter and spring of 1920 and continued by the fisheries steamer Halcyon during the winter and spring of 1920 - 21 and the summers of 1921 and 1922. Several reports on special phases of the survey have been published, but not until 1920 did the body of data warrant undertaking a general account of the fish fauna, general biology, and oceanography of the Gulf, of which the present memoir is the first part.
