Excerpt from An Anarchist Woman T is possible that in fifty years people now called anarchists will have in America as respectable a place as they now occupy in France. When we are more accustomed to social thought, we shall not regard those who radically differ from us, as mad dogs or malevolent idiots. We may, indeed, still look on them as mistaken, but what now seems to us their insanity or peculiar atrociousness will vanish with our growing understanding and experience. When we become less crude in civilisation, they will seem less crude to us. When, with growing culture, we see things more nearly as they are, the things we see, including the anarchists, will seem more sympathetic. Excerpt from Anarchism and Other Essays Propagandism is not, as some suppose, a "trade," because nobody will follow a "trade" at which you may work with the industry of a slave and die with the reputation of a mendicant. The motives of any persons to pursue such a profession must be different from those of trade, deeper than pride, and stronger than interest. George Jacob Holyoake. Among the men and women prominent in the public life of America there are but few whose names are mentioned as often as that of Emma Goldman. Yet the real Emma Goldman is almost quite unknown. The sensational press has surrounded her name with so much misrepresentation and slander, it would seem almost a miracle that, in spite of this web of calumny, the truth breaks through and a better appreciation of this much maligned idealist begins to manifest itself. There is but little consolation in the fact that almost every representative of a new idea has had to struggle and suffer under similar difficulties. Is it of any avail that a former president of a republic pays homage at Osawatomie to the memory of John Brown? Excerpt from Anarchy or Order: Twelve Papers for the Times Among the forty millions of born Englishmen, born Irishmen, born Scotsmen and born Welsh men probably few theoretical anarchists could be found. The anarchists of the United Kingdom, almost without exception, are undesirable aliens who brought their anarchism with them to our shores. But, while anarchist doctrine is rarely held or preached by British men and women, anarchist modes of thinking and living are en countered every day, in all ranks and conditions of society. I want it, so I will have it or I hate it, so I won't do it or What other people think is no concern of mine or I mean to live my own life in my own way or Let the man next door take care of himself and I will take care of myself - these and similar sayings are being uttered, not as the pert boast ings of an afiected egoism, but as deliberate axioms by which to make the most and best of life. And what is far worse, they are not only spoken but acted upon with a thoroughness which outruns mere selfishness and becomes downright Anarchy. And out of so much an archist practice, anarchist doctrine is sure to arise if the practice be not exposed and con demned and corrected. An Anarchist Woman This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Excerpt from Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist It is a human document. It is a difficult thing to be sincere. More than that, it is a valuable thing. To be so, means unusual qualities of the heart and of the head; unusual qualities of character. The books that possess this quality are unusual books. There are not many deliberately autobiographical writings that are markedly sincere; there are not many direct human documents. This is one of these few books. Exquisite Rebel written by Voltairine de Cleyre and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-02-10 with Literary Criticism categories.

Emma Goldman called Voltairine de Cleyre “the most gifted and brilliant anarchist woman America ever produced.” Yet her writings and speeches on anarchism and feminism—as radical, passionate, and popular at the time as Goldman’s—are virtually unknown today. This important book brings de Cleyre’s eloquent and incisive work out of undeserved obscurity. Twenty-one essays are reprinted here, including her classic works: “Anarchism and the American Tradition,” “The Dominant Idea,” and “Sex Slavery.” Three biographical essays are also included: two new ones by Sharon Presley and Crispin Sartwell, and a rarely reprinted one from Emma Goldman. At a time when the mainstream women’s movement asked only for the right to vote and rarely challenged the status quo, de Cleyre demanded an end to sex roles, called for economic independence for women, autonomy within and without marriage, and offered a radical critique of the role of the Church and State in oppressing women. In today’s world of anti-globalization actions, de Cleyre’s anarchist ideals of local self-rule, individual conscience, and decentralization of power still remain fresh and relevant.

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Anarchists' Cases: Brief for the Defendants The record in this case embraces all the evidence in the trial below, and contains more than pages of type-written matter. Of this an abstract has been made which contains about 500 pages. To get a comprehension of what these contain seems to be the work of months. In order therefore to present the facts and the legal questions arising, I have endeavored to collate and arrange from these, in reference to each defendant, all evidence for and. Against him, and afterwards to present some of the more prominent legal questions arising in the case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Rebels: Into Anarchy and Out Again It was a home of two tiny rooms. The room in the rear was not much larger than a good-sized clothes closet, and not the stuffiest of closets could be more lacking in sunlight and air. The walls were as blank as an underground dungeon's. There was neither window nor ventilating shaft. The room in front, almost twice as large, though half a dozen steps would have brought anybody with full-grown legs across its entire length, was a kitchen and living-room by day, a bedroom by night. Its two little windows gave a view of a narrow, stone-paved court and, not ten feet away, the rear wall of another tenement. The sunlight never found its way into that little court. By day it was dim and damp, by night a fearsome place, black and sepulchral. In this little bit of a home lived five persons, my father and mother, myself, my baby brother, and Schmeel, our boarder. What squalid home in New York's crowded ghetto is without its boarder? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
