Excerpt from An Anatomy of Poetry Psychologists and students of comparative religion have, of course, necessarily long concerned them selves with primitive art. At last we have all, poets, critics, and psychologists, begun to wonder whether a study of modern and civilised art, rather from the same point of View, might not yield inter esting results. Why do people paint pictures? Why do people buy pictures? Why do people write poetry? Why do people read poetry? They always have, and they apparently always mean to. How is aesthetic experience related to other experiences and to life in general? IS the poet a maker of beauty or a prophet of the laws? These are some of the ques tions that we have begun to ask ourselves, - to ask with a certain Shame for they seem so indecently fundamental. Now the modern poetic movement has been defined as being among other things a movement which is bringing poetry closer to everyday life. Here then is a sort of natural movement toward synthesis for us to study. Perhaps therefore before we try to consider the alarmingly large, vague question, 'what is poetry for?' we shall find it easier if we first ask the smaller question, What is modern poetry for? It is impossible to appreciate poetry fully without some knowledge of the various aspects of poetic technique. First published in 1953, with a second edition in 1982, this title explains all the usual technical terms in an accessible manner. Marjorie Boulton shows that it is possible to approach a poem from a business-like perspective without losing enjoyment. This reissue will be of particular value to students as well as those with a general interest in the specifics of poetry.

Excerpt from A System of English Versification: Containing Rules for the Structure of the Different Kinds of Verse; Illustrated by Numerous Examples From the Best Poets The following work is intended for the use of students in the advanced classes of high schools and colleges, and is designed as a supplement to a course of Rhetoric and English Literature. Such other persons as are led by their inclinations to spend their leisure hours in the reading of the English poets, or in wooing the Muses, may receive from it valuable assistance. It is thought to supply an important desideratum. It is a matter of surprise to the foreign student, who attempts the study of English poetry and the structure of its verse, to find that we have no work on which he can rely as authority on this subject. In the other modern languages, the most learned philologers have treated of the subject of versification, in all its parts. In English alone, in a language which possesses a body of poetical literature more extensive, as well as more valuable than any other modern language, not excepting the Italian, the student has no rules to guide him, but a few meagre and incorrect outlines appended to elementary text-books. Excerpt from The Order of Poetry: An Introduction Poems are written to be read or spoken and to be enjoyed. Poems are also "studied," analyzed, evaluated, out any close inspection which does not have for its end the pleasure to be derived from, or the appreciation of, poetry is indicative of a serious confusion of end and means. We concede readily that many poems require "study" for the fullest understanding of subject matter, techniques, or even artistic refinements of diction, imagery, symbols, and the like. This is true because sometimes we are not familiar with certain topical or historical allusions in poetry which were common knowledge once but have now become obscure. This is true again because of various implications - biographical, philosophical, social, literary - which may elude us in a surface reading of the text. There is a tendency, of course, to be impatient with poetry that is "difficult," by which is usually meant poetry that requires repeated readings and probings. Yet difficulty need not be equated with obscurity, although in fact they are sometimes one and the same. Nor, for that matter, is obscurity necessarily a fault. It is to be deplored only when the poet deliberately clouds his work to create the impression of a profundity that is not there. The critic must train himself in judgment to explore what is profound and to expose what is merely obfuscated. The pleasure attendant upon the discovery of multilayered meanings, evocative imagery, complex symbols, or intricate metrical devices, is ample compensation for the effort of exploration. We do not suggest that all poetry is so involved as to demand strenuous intellectual attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
