"The photographs in this volume show the incomparable richness of the pharaonic fauna in all forms of artistic expression - painting, sculpture, relief carving, architectural ornamentation, and even in hieroglyphs - ranging from astonishing realism in the depiction of birds and beasts, both wild and domesticated with which the people of the Nile Valley came into daily contact to hieratic stylization in portraying the pantheon of animal headed gods and the sacred and fabulous creatures that inhabited the ancient Egyptians' devotional, funerary and magic world.".

Various attempts have been made to systematize the mammals depicted in Egyptian tomb paintings, inscriptions, carvings, figurines and other objects, and as mummies, but there are many discrepancies, variable spellings and names, including now obsolete Latin names, and mis-identifications. The Egyptian artists themselves sometimes used the wrong hieroglyph or drew some parts of animals incorrectly. Dale Osborn’s comprehensive reassessment, presented here in a facsimile reissue, catalogues around 100 separate species, ranging from hedgehogs to hippopotami, Anubis Baboons to Zebu cattle, that can be identified in Egyptian art from prehistoric, through Pre-Dynastic to Late Kingdom times. Profusely illustrated, the catalogue is arranged by Order, then species, each entry providing the relevant hieroglyph, a brief description of the animal, its natural habitat and distribution, and a narrative on its depiction in Egyptian art through time, by location, types of illustration or object, and context (tomb etc). Known errors and discrepancies, either in original scripts or classical and/or modern literature, are listed. Mammals are abundantly depicted in tomb paintings and inscriptions. Common scenes include hunts, processions, wild animals being led on chains, domesticated animals in household and working environments, and satirical scenes. Such scenes provide many insights into the lives of Egyptians and their relationships with animals, that are further enhanced by many decorative figurines and statues and, often poignantly, by the mummies of mostly small animals including cats and dogs.

The gods of Ancient Egypt conjure up images of hieroglyphs with animal-headed people, fantastic civilizations, and a past that seems both unimaginably distant and still tenuously connected to the present day. Although the names Ra, Anubis, and Isis still linger today in modern fiction, the truth about these gods reveals the ancient Egyptians themselves. Inside you will read about... ✓ Osiris ✓ Anubis ✓ Isis ✓ Ra ✓ Maat ✓ Hathor ✓ Wadjet ✓ Nefertum And many more! A look at the principal gods of Ancient Egypt gives insight into the culture of world's first great civilization. Even today, their moments, their obelisks, and their pyramids endure and remind us that people can leave lasting marks on the world that humble and inspire us all.

Discover The Gods and Myths of Egyptian Mythology Most fascinating about the ancient Egyptians is that they were natural-born storytellers, which shows not only in their myths and gods, but also in how they lived their lives. They invented a unique writing system unique containing over 1,000 signs, including ideograms and phonograms, but that isn't all. The ancient Egyptians managed to fill the walls of their temples, palaces, tombs, obelisks, and even houses with their history, their stories, and the details of how they lived. They immortalized their history on stone, papyrus, and clay.
