Excerpt from Artist in Corfu With a story reaching far beyond history to the glorious myths of Greece, Corfu shared also in its Golden Age, and in the fantastic mediaeval romance of its Frankish subjection. The little island has played its part in every period of history, and until recent years was an important junction for commerce, and a more important political asset. With a beauty of scenery unsurpassed in dainty perfection, and a climate that gives months of exquisite weather, Corfu has been strangely forgotten by our generation, and one can get information of it more readily from the classical scholar than from the average traveller. East and West no longer strive for dominance in the Ionian Straits, and with the changing conditions of modern life commerce has passed into other channels. The island stepping-stones are no longer needed. The great Venetian forts are silent and dismantled, and the lovely circle of the bay holds only a few cargo boats, a passing yacht, a fleet of fishing craft; at most, a squad of orderly warships, replacing the free-booting pirate-admirals who were used to find Corfu so rich a prey. And the oft-disputed harbour reposes under a clause of perpetual neutrality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Bibliophilos written by Charalambos Dendrinos and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-08 with History categories.

The present volume is a Festschrift in honour of the distinguished Byzantinist Costas N. Constantinides. The title of the volume, Bibliophilos: Books and Learning in the Byzantine World, reflects Professor Constantinides’ major contribution to the fields of Greek palaeography, editions of Byzantine texts, Byzantine history, scholarship and education, and Cypriot manuscripts and culture. The volume is introduced by a preface and a tabula gratulatoria dedicated to the honorand, followed by twenty articles, written by seasoned and younger scholars, who are former colleagues and students of Professor Constantinides. These articles, which appear in alphabetical order, offer new material and shed fresh light to the study of Greek manuscripts, binders and scribes, and the life, works and activities of Byzantine scholars, teachers and students, providing editions of unpublished texts, including letters and poems, and exploring various aspects of Byzantine and Cypriot history, literature, art, science and culture. In the process the authors often challenge earlier views and offer new interpretations and insights. Bibliophilos is a book for the student, teacher and scholar of Byzantium in particular, and for every bibliophile in general.

Handbook Of Computational Neurodegeneration written by Panagiotis Vlamos and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-25 with Medical categories.

The Handbook of Computational Neurodegeneration provides a comprehensive overview of the field and thus bridges the gap between standard textbooks of research on neurodegeneration and dispersed publications for specialists that have a narrowed focus on computational methods to study this complicated process. The handbook reviews the central issues and methodological approaches related to the field for which the reader pursues a thorough overview. It also conveys more advanced knowledge, thus serving both as an introductory text and as a starting point for an in-depth study of a specific area, as well as a quick reference source for the expert by reflecting the state of the art and future prospects. The book includes topics that are usually missing in standard textbooks and that are only marginally represented in the specific literature. The broad scope of this handbook is reflected by five major parts that facilitate an integration of computational concepts, methods and applications in the study of neurodegeneration. Each part is intended to stand on its own, giving an overview of the topic and the most important problems and approaches, which are supported by examples, practical applications, and proposed methodologies. The basic concepts and knowledge, standard procedures and methods are presented, as well as recent advances and new perspectives.

Lawrence Durrell’s position as one of the twentieth century’s leading novelists is continually being enlarged and revised. This book presents unusual and unorthodox explorations of Alexandria, the city at the heart of Durrell’s writing, his family relationships, his biographer Michael Haag, and his affinity with such diverse writers as Rilke and Virgil. In particular, it offers an insight into Durrell’s emotions and sensibilities in elaborating his Sicilian Carousel and a penetrating and totally unique reading of Durrell’s Alexandria Quartet in the light of the art and landscape of ancient Egypt.

The Ionian Islands written by Anthony Hirst and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-26 with History categories.

The Ionian Islands stretch south from the Adriatic, where Corfu’s Pantokrator mountain overlooks Albania across narrow straits, along the western coast of mainland Greece through Paxi, Kephalonia, Ithaca, Lefkada and Zakynthos, to Kythira, midway between Athens and Crete. Three crucial sea-battles were fought here – Sybota (the first recorded), Actium and Lepanto – an indication of the Ionians’ role as an East-West crossroads, between Western Christendom and the Orthodox and Islamic East. Ruled by Venice in her Stato da Mar (sea-empire), the islands became an independent state, as the Septinsular Republic and then, under British Protection, as the United States of the Ionian Islands. Before the mainland Greeks had a State, the Ionian people were proud of having a university – from 1824 – in Corfu town, a World Heritage Site. The islands were united with the Kingdom of Greece in 1864 – the first addition to its territory. This book (with over thirty illustrations) explores the history, archaeology, languages, customs and culture of the Ionian Islands. Without venturing far from the islands, readers will learn much about this distinctive part of the Mediterranean and Greek world. The chapters range from the mythology of the Bronze Age (Homer’s Scheria, where Odysseus startled Nausicaa as she bathed) to today, concentrating particularly on the British Protectorate (1815–1864). One, illustrated by contemporary maps, deals with descriptions of the islands by a fourteenth-century Venetian writing in Latin. The roles of Jews, Souliot refugees, Greek revolutionaries, rebel peasants in Cephalonia, and workers in Corfu’s port suburb of Mandouki are examined in detail. There are contributions on religion and philosophy, as well as literature, music, painting, and the folk-art of carved walking-canes.
