Written in the early 1960s and published during the Cultural Revolution, this book is China's leading text on the emergence and development of capitalism in England, the United States, France, Germany, and Japan. It has retained its relevance by its emphasis on the importance of economic factors in historical change, thus confirming Deng Xiaoping's vision of China's development driven by economics. Here is a perspective on the historical development of capitalism as it applies to the histories of the major capitalist countries; it should prove interesting to students of Chinese thought on economic development filtered through the unique Chinese vision of Marxism.

A great many socio-economic events of the utmost importance have taken place in rapid succession in the historically short period of hardly more than three decades. After the Second World War the pace of socio-economic progress has experienced an unprecedented acceleration. This is nothing new in itself. Social formations and the corresponding productive forces prior w socialism had also followed each other at a rapidly increasing rate. Acceleration can also be witnessed in the accumulation of human knowledge, in the fielc;ls of science and technology. Parallel with the development of the productive forces, the growth of population has been exponential. More than one and a half thousand years were needed for the world population to double since the beginning of our era, whereas it takes now less than 40 years. The emergence of capitalism, the appearance of mechanized mass production brought about a radical change in the general progress of human civilization. It opened up the machine age. The classics of Marxism highly appreciated the new power and labour machines and the resulting growth in production, and stated that the productive forces created under capitalism had far surpassed those brought about by all earlier societies taken together. This is true even though the technology of that time looked upon in hindsight had produced hardly more than primitive steam engines and simple labour machines which have by now become, for the most part, relics of technical history.

"In most narratives of the history of global economic development, the Netherlands plays an early and leading role. Indeed, the Netherlands has maintained a leading position among the most wealthy nations since at least the fifteenthcentury. Adding to the literature on economic development, Maarten Prak and Jan Luiten van Zanden, bring new evidence to bear on our understanding of how institutions in the Netherlands fostered unprecedented, long term economic growth that changed the course of history. The authors argue that informal institutions had developed long before the statecreated the institutions commonly held to be decisive . These informal institutions -believed in Dutch folklore to have originated in the polders, tracts of low land reclaimed from the sea-demonstrate how private and semi-public organizations provided public safeguards for economic activity in the state's absence. The authors explore how cities, corporations, guilds, commons, and other civil society organizations were structured and how they delivered advanced levels of security for market transactions. The Dutch Miracle argues that it was this sociopolitical structure in which the early market economy of the Netherlands emerged and that enabled the country's almost uninterrupted long-term economic growth"--

Humankind has evolved in many ways. The basic reason for this evolution has been the non-stop urge for more. Innovation has helped humankind to facilitate living and increase the standard of living too. Capitalism has served the same purpose. It was by the way of capitalism that a major part of the population was able to earn higher wages and increase the standard of living. Capitalism has a long history. This history has some positives and some negatives based on the viewpoints of the various sections of the society. Capitalism benefited the lower class by increasing their incomes, but at the same time, it reduced the power of the upper class and the state. The benefits that could be enjoyed only by the landed gentry were now also being enjoyed by the poor and the landless. There were rebellions and resentments among both the sections, but still, capitalism has emerged as a major economic system and it has been followed till date in many of the economies. Capitalism took many forms and has evolved itself.

A comprehensive and concise history of capitalism from its origins to today In this authoritative and accessible book, one of the world's most renowned historians provides a concise and comprehensive history of capitalism within a global perspective from its medieval origins to the 2008 financial crisis and beyond. From early commercial capitalism in the Arab world, China, and Europe, to nineteenth- and twentieth-century industrialization, to today’s globalized financial capitalism, Jürgen Kocka offers an unmatched account of capitalism, one that weighs its great achievements against its great costs, crises, and failures. Based on intensive research, the book puts the rise of capitalist economies in social, political, and cultural context, and shows how their current problems and foreseeable future are connected to a long history. Sweeping in scope, the book describes how capitalist expansion was connected to colonialism; how industrialism brought unprecedented innovation, growth, and prosperity but also increasing inequality; and how managerialism, financialization, and globalization later changed the face of capitalism. The book also addresses the idea of capitalism in the work of thinkers such as Marx, Weber, and Schumpeter, and chronicles how criticism of capitalism is as old as capitalism itself, fed by its persistent contradictions and recurrent emergencies. Authoritative and accessible, Capitalism is an enlightening account of a force that has shaped the modern world like few others.

Capitalism has been a controversial concept. In the second half of the 20th century, many historians have either not used the concept at all, or only in passing. Many regarded the term as too broad, holistic and vague or too value-loaded, ideological and polemic. This volume brings together leading scholars to explore why the term has recently experienced a comeback and assess how useful the term can be in application to social and economic history. The contributors discuss whether and how the history of capitalism enables us to ask new questions, further explore unexhausted sources and discover new connections between previously unrelated phenomena. The chapters address case studies drawn from around the world, giving attention to Europe, Africa and beyond. This is a timely reassessment of a crucial concept, which will be of great interest to scholars and students of economic history.
