Abstract: This is a PhD thesis that investigated how chronic ethanol consumption by rats, followed by 2 months of abstinence, affected the functional connectivity of several pathways in the hippocampus. The techniques entailed field potential electrophysiology in anesthetized animals, which was used to investigate basal synaptic transmission, short-term plasticity and long-term potentiaton. Connectivity patterns were assessed using current source density analyses of depth profile data. The findings have been published as 4 papers in 1981, 1982, 1984. Dissertation Discovery Company and the University of Florida are dedicated to making scholarly works more discoverable and accessible throughout the world. This is the second time that I have had the honor of opening an interna tional symposium dedicated to the functions of the hippocampus here in Pecs. It was a pleasure to greet the participants in the hope that their valuable contributions will make this meeting a tradition in this town. As one of the hosts of the symposium, I had the sorrowful duty to remind you of the absence of a dear colleague, Professor Graham God dard. His tragic and untimely death represents the irreparable loss of both a friend and an excellent researcher. This symposium is dedicated to his memory. If I compare the topics of the lectures of this symposium with those of the previous one, a striking difference becomes apparent. A dominating tendency of the previous symposium was to attempt to define hippocam pal function or to offer data relevant to supporting or rejecting existing theoretical positions. No such tendency is reflected in the titles of the present symposium, in which most of the contributions deal with hip pocampal phenomena at the most elementary level. Electrical, biochemi cal, biophysical, and pharmacological events at the synaptic, membrane, or intracellular level are analyzed without raising the question of what kind of integral functions these elementary phenomena are a part of.

In Vivo Perfusion and Release of Neuroactive Substances: Methods and Strategies examines the perfusion and release methods and strategies used to study in vivo neurochemistry in relation to electrophysiological and behavioral events. More specifically, it reviews methodological alternatives and experimental strategies for investigating the in vivo perfusion and release of brain substances in the central nervous system. It also assesses the potential and limitations of in vivo perfusion methods, including high-pressure liquid chromatography and highly sensitive as well as specific immunoassays and receptor assays, as a means to discover novel neurochemicals recovered from perfusates. Organized into two sections comprised of 17 chapters, this book begins with an overview of methodological alternatives and experimental strategies that are deemed critical for the outcome of research on the perfusion and release of neuroactive substances in the CNS. It then discusses the personal experiences of the scientists in studying the in vivo neurochemistry and its correlation with other neural events. The chapters that follow focus on the chemical, bioelectrical, and behavioral aspects of brain function; interdisciplinary techniques for approaching problems of neuronal connectivity, neuroendocrinology, motor behavior, neuropathology, etc.; technical issues associated with push-pull perfusion in unanesthetized and unrestrained experimental animals; hippocampal involvement in the effects of ethyl alcohol; and the use of the push-pull perfusion technique in neuroendocrinology. This book will be of interest to specialists and neuroscientists as well as students working in the fields of neuroscience, neurochemistry, and neuroendocrinology.

The NMDA receptor plays a critical role in the development of the central nervous system and in adult neuroplasticity, learning, and memory. Therefore, it is not surprising that this receptor has been widely studied. However, despite the importance of rhythms for the sustenance of life, this aspect of NMDAR function remains poorly studied. Written
