Excerpt from The Model Elementary Arithmetic: Including Oral and Written Exercises The treatment of each number includes the four processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and recognizes the fact that they are intimately and naturally connected, and that one operation may be said to include all the others, for all the Operations are only the comparison of numbers, one with another. They are, in fact, different methods of reading the same general relation of numbers, thus: is read 4 and 4 equals 8; 2x4=8 is read 2 times 4 equals 8; 4 is read 4 less 2 equals 2; and 4 is read 2 is contained in 4, twice, or 2 can be taken twice from 4, or 2 is one-half of 4. Excerpt from A New Elementary Arithmetic: Uniting Oral and Written Exercises Fon several years past there has been an increasing demand for a two-book series of Arithmetics, and various attempts to meet this demand have been made, but so far unsuccessfully. The most common device has been the selection of two books from a series composed of three or more books, and the presen tatien of the treatises, thus selected, as a complete two-book series. In several instances a thin little primary, with simple lessons for the first two or three years of school instruction, has been united with an advanced treatise, nearly every page of which presents matter too difficult for children under twelve years of age. In other instances the primary lessons have been wholly discarded, and the second and a higher book have been made a two-book series. Both of these expedients have proved unsatisfactory, for the obvious reason that the first book either ends too low or begins too high. The use of a thin primary as a first book brings the pupils to the second or higher book before they have the capac ity or the training requisite to master such a treatise, and the use of a second book for a first begins the course at too high a point, and makes necessary several years of oral instruction, much of which is poor, or is given with unnecessary labor on the part of both teachers and pupils. The lessons in number, adapted to the first two years of school life, can best be given orally, but exclusive oral instruction in the third, fourth, and fifth years involves an amount of blackboard and slate work which is a severe tax on the eyes and nerves of little children. The Elementary Arithmetic aims to avoid both of these errors. It covers the ground of the first two books of the author's three-book series, but does not present the first lessons so fully. It takes it for granted that pupils who have been in school two or three years do not need to spend months in learning to count, read, and write numbers from 1 to 100. Excerpt from Bradbury's New Elementary Arithmetic: Comprising Oral and Written Work Tms book is now presented in a revised and enlarged form in answer to the increasing demand for more arithmetical work in the Intermediate and lower Grammar school classes. Though the plan remains the same, a large number of exam ples have been added in the different subjects, and the work has been made more complete by giving models in script type for bills, orders, notes, drafts, etc. Oral and written work has been combined throughout the book. Small numbers have been selected for the exercises, and great care has been taken to have everything clearly stated and the work progressive. Excerpt from Standard Elementary Arithmetic: Combining Oral and Written Exercises Too great weight cannot be attached to the oral exercises. In every instance the problem should be stated clearly and but once. Then designate the boy or girl who is to solve it. The pupil Should immediately repeat the example, and reason it out to a correct result. If he is unable to state it correctly, he should be charged with a failure. Attention will thus be fostered, memory strengthened, a rigidly log ical method Of solution acquired, and pupils will soon do creditable and even brilliant work. Excerpt from Sheldons Elementary Arithmetic: With Oral and Written Exercises The methods employed are those which, beginning with lessons on objects, or their representative pictures, advance by the usual induc tive processes to a distinct apprehension of the rules and definitions reached. The grading of the work, the unusually large number of problems, oral and written, and the many other useful and varied exercises and drill tables, will, it is thought, be highly appreciated by the teacher and of great benefit to the pupil. The book is an elementary arithmetic, and yet by the addition at the end of the book of certain useful business forms and processes, it has been made complete for the pupils that leave school at an early age. In Section IV and the following sections, the definitions and rules have purposely been made to correspond with those of the Complete Arithmetic, in order that pupils may not be required to learn new defini tions and rules when studying the higher book. The examples and problems are of a simpler character, and adapted to the minds of younger children. The completion of the Elementary Arithmetic thus becomes a thorough preparation for the more difficult work in the Complete. The publishers believe, that in these two books, containing so great a number of well-graded examples and problems, teachers will' find a series of thoroughly practical and progressive arithmetics.
