Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Human Physiology, on the Basis of the Précis Elémentaire De Physiologie In the year 1822, the undersigned published a translation of The Summary of Physiology by M. Magendie. It was most favourably received by the profession, two large editions having been rapidly disposed of. For reasons over which the editor had no control, and which are at present unimwrtant to the public, no new edition of this translation has appeared since the second. The original work, however, has gone through several large editions with increasing reputation, and now occupies the highest rank among standard works, not only in France, but throughout Europe. Since the period alluded to, the science of Physiology has undergone, on many points, a complete revo lution, in the accomplishment of which M. Magendie has acted a very conspicuous part. Since the death of Sir Charles Bell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Excerpt from A Treatise on Human Physiology: Designed for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine This volume is Offered to the medical profession of the United States, as a text-book for students, and also as a means of commu nicating, in a condensed form, such new facts and ideas in physio logy, as have marked the progress of the science within a recent period. Many of these topics are of great practical importance to the medical man, as influencing, in various ways, his views on pathology and therapeutics; and they are all of interest for the physician who desires to keep pace with the annual advance of his profession, as indicating the present position and extent of one of the most progressive of the departments of medicine. It has been the Object Of the author, more particularly, to pre sent, at the same time with the conclusions which physiologists have been led to adopt on any particular subject, the experimental basis upon which those conclusions are founded; and he has on deavored, so far as possible, to establish or corroborate them by original investigation, or by a repetition Of the labors of others. This is more especially the case in that part of the book (section I.) devoted to the function Of Nutrition; and as a general thing, throughout the work, any statement of experimental facts, not expressly referred to the authority of some other writer, is given by the author as the result of direct personal observation. Excerpt from Treatise on Human Physiology: For the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine The anatomist studies the form and relation of the weights, the pen dulum, the hands etc., at rest; the physiologist, the fall of the weight, the swinging of the pendulum, the movement of the hands. Anatomy is the statical, physiology the dynamical, part of biology. As well might the mechanician hope to understand the movements of the clock and to regulate it without a knowledge of the parts com posing it, as for the physiologist to understand the motions of the living body without a previous knowledge of its structure. Anatomy and physiology are so intimately associated that, philo sophically, they Should be studied together, indeed, to separate them, except for the convenience of teaching, 1s highly illogical. AS Hyrtl3 well observes, Anatomy, unassociated with physiology, is a mindless study and does not deserve the name of a science. Can one study the arrangement of a machine without any reference to its object? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Human Physiology: Theoretic and Practical This book was written primarily for medical and dental practitioners and students. It emphasizes, however, the mechanism of sense-organs, neryes, and muscles as the basis of the individual's efficiency; and it is the first text-book of medical physiology to recognize the more and more insistent demands of the mental process. For both of these reasons it is also especially adapted to the needs of students and teachers of physical education and of psychology.
