The prevalence of fecal incontinence is approximately 5% in the general population. In all patients, the treatment of fecal incontinence is primarily conservative and surgery is offered as second line treatment. Electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves (SNS) with an implanted electrode is a minimally invasive and effective treatment of idiopathic FI and the indications for SNS are widening. However, SNS requires surgery while percutaneous electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves could be a non-invasive alternative. Stimulation for Faecal Incontinence comprises five studies. Study I examines the clinical effectiveness of transcutaneous stimulation. Study II and III examined the acute effect of rectal stimulation in idiopathic incontinent patients and patients with spinal cord injury. In study IV the validity of a new research tool for assessment of gastrointestinal motility during stimulation is evaluated. In study V, small intestinal motility is investigated in patients implanted with a sacral nerve stimulator for faecal incontinence. Based on the present book it can be concluded that: DGN stimulation reduces faecal incontinence in patients with idiopathic faecal incontinence but the mode of action remains unknown. DGN does not affect rectal wall properties in patients with idiopathic faecal incontinence. DGN increases rectal tone in patients with supraconal spinal cord injury, but the validity and clinical importance of the finding need further study. MTS-1 is useful for determination of gastric emptying and small intestinal transit time. Preliminary results indicate that SNS does not affect small intestinal motility, but data need further analysis and have to be confirmed in a larger study.

This book guides practitioners in the assessment of patients with a liver problem. The emphasis is on the role of macro- and microscopic pathology in elucidating pathogenesis as well as identifying confounding features of image findings that may lead to a more elaborate differential diagnosis. If appropriate, the role of light and electron microscopic examination, along with the role of specific stains and molecular techniques, is illustrated. In addition, the concept of each liver disease is summarized briefly and its up-to-data is provided, and unresolved problems in diagnosis, treatment, and pathogenesis are clearly described. The approach in this book is a practical one with a focus on the evaluation of illustrative cases, simultaneously demonstrating cross-sectional images (ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and angiography), pathological findings, and peritoneoscopic images. The diagnosis and therapy are summed up in helpful tables, and association of clinical manifestations with image analysis and pathological findings is shown to be important in differential diagnosis and treatment. With the authors comprising internationally renowned experts, this book will serve as a useful source of information for medical students, physicians, internists, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, and pathologists worldwide.

This is the first volume in the new Springer Major Reference Work series entitled Coloproctology. The book covers key topics in the anatomy and physiology of the colon, rectum and anus and the diagnosis of colorectal/anal diseases and disorders. It thus forms a sound basis for further volumes in the series that will focus on the treatment of more specific clinical conditions. The subjects addressed in the volume are crucial to effective patient management and the book highlights the fact that adequate diagnostic assessment of a given disease is significantly related to the pathophysiologic interpretation of the pathologic process. The purpose of the volume is to provide readers with up-to-date knowledge on colorectal and anal anatomy and physiology, particularly from a treatment perspective and to describe the methodology to be employed in choosing the best diagnostic work-up in coloproctology.
